Every dollar we spend across the border is supporting another country's economy rather than ours.
Thoughts?
I Shop in the US as well but I often feel guilty

I know for sure that for one cross border shopper, there are at least 500 who shop locally. Check out any mall traffic on weekends (there's a riot in the big ones) and compare it with the border lineups. If these 500 local shoppers are paying at least 15% more than the cross-border ones then at the end of the day it is squared I guess. Also, if you're bringing in more than the limit, then you pay custom duty at the Canadian border. This duty money would go into the economy as well. Besides that, you will be paying HST (extra money to Govt.) from July that will raise the prices. In other words, money in the Govt. pockets from local shoppers. Which, eventually contributes to the overall GDP.
Hence, no real effect on the economy due to the handful US-bounds. However, if there is a 40-50% population shop across then yes that will dampen the economy for sure. But, it's not so and won't happen as well.
It is merely my observation, though lacking statistics. So, I am not at all worried about the local economy while shopping in the States. If local economy is ripping us hard, putting a hole in my pockets, and affecting my livelihood then as a free citizen I have every right to shop where the prices are low. I know that the Canadian economy is well supported even if a small percentage of the population shop in US..
I will however, check the statistics on this if available. Looking at the numbers will be interesting.
I have got my MRI done in 1 month after the doc wrote the requirement.
Took me 1 year to get a optional major surgery.. and i did not mind the wait..
If it was a mandatory surgery the doc would have scheduled it right away or sooner..
Canadian health care works for most parts.. when it works it rarely comes in the papers..
I am happy that an additional 40million will now be able to get insurance in USA thanks to obama.. for those guys the "NIGHTMARE" is over.

Cons:
1. Higher taxes (as you noted)
Pros:
1. Health care geared to need, not income.
2. Generally cleaner cities.
3. Not having to worry about getting shot in the street (outside of Toronto, that is).
4. Far superior public schools.
And the most important one:
5. Real beer (not the yellow swill made from corn syrup that Americans have to drink).
It is one thing to applaud mediocrity and other to be victim of it. While the socialized system of medicine in Canada works fine for people for ordinary problems and reportedly in case of emergency situations, I would urge people to have a look at wait times for MRI and Cancer surgery. These wait times are insensibly high. God forbid, if someone dear to you falls sick with some serous disease, they would pay with their life. I understand the feelings and attitude of left leaning socially progressive people who feel that “ Tu agar meri na ho saki to kuch nahi , magar tu aur kisi ki bhi na ho” meaning that if “If you do not belong to me, you can not belong to any one else”. If someone contends that health care system is good in Canada, best of luck to him. It is difficult to argue about this. On CD forum, the topic has been very passionately discussed in past. I just want to draw attention to the fact that we are paying a very high price for mediocrity called free health care. We have to pay for ambulance, drugs, parking at hospitals, room charges, charges for getting reports, Ontario health tax (Employee and employer) and higher income taxes. Health care is milch cow of Mcguinty. Billions that are spent on fraudulent ehealth projects is testimony. Recently there was news that Mcguinty cronies get tens of thousands in salary from University health network without ever working there. It is well known that Cancer patients do not get latest drugs as these are costly. Thanks to Obama, USA soon will have same kind of problems that we have in Canada. One more reason not to migrate to USA.
