Canada risks losing 75,000 tech jobs
Report shows strong competition from China, India
Urges creation of information technology services for U.S.
Seventy-five thousand Canadian information technology jobs could migrate abroad by 2010 unless the country positions itself as a "nearshore" provider of IT services to the United States, a PricewaterhouseCoopers study suggests.
The advisory firm said yesterday that "offshoring" of Canadian technology work to India, China, Russia and other low-cost emerging economies "is about to dramatically take off."
PwC's research found that cost is not the only reason companies send activities offshore. Providers stated that cost savings for Canadian firms that sent work to India were in the range of 30 per cent to 50 per cent, whereas buyers reported savings of only 20 per cent to 30 per cent.
But many of India's top outsourcing firms have attained software quality standards ahead of North American competitors, PwC said.
"Domestic providers take note: More than one buyer said that their decision to use offshore suppliers was motivated, at least in part, by the poor service quality and account management of their traditional suppliers," stated David Ticoll, an author and IT strategist who took part in the study.
"New offshore players, eager to serve and (be) flexible in making business arrangements, are gaining credibility fast."
However, the study indicated that Canada could retain and build its advantages as a "nearshore" provider to U.S. and European companies.
"Our over-all labour costs put Canada midway between the U.S. and India, and we have other advantages like geographic proximity to the U.S. market," observed Robert Scott, head of PwC's Canadian IT advisory practice.
"But a lot more focus is needed if Canada's nearshore IT services industry is to keep pace with job losses in other areas," Scott said.
"We found that if no action is taken, at least 75,000 of Canada's current 550,000 IT jobs could migrate offshore by 2010, but with right actions, IT jobs could increase by 165,000."

Biomed,
Good article ...one feels great to see where india is headed . what a great thing to be proud of .
one thing which i would like to differ is that i would not "pump up new immigrants and say "pack your bag and move to india"...yes i'd say that if i was doing it myself....one should lead by example ....and not be like the general who chickens out in taking the leap himself but and encourages others to jump.
life is no a bed of roses in india as well if one has to start from the scratch, .... we would be more successful in meeting the goals of this site if we try to help and encourage new immigrants who are here in finding their foothold here itself rather than telling them to go back and probably face more hardships..
lets lead by example not by rhetoric

Mishtar ! I think biomed's comments were , at best, a hyperbole. No one can force a new immigrant to come here, and it would be unwise/unethical to paint a rosy picture for new immigrants here, vis-a-vis Jobs. I read on this forums that couples earning 60K INR want to leave all their stuff in India and come here.
I dunno if you have an Indian passport/citizenship but if you have one, trust me that will be the most sought after citizenship in the next decade. You should have the capability to call yourself as a global citizen. What I mean is that you should be able to travel anywhere in the world (assuming that you are a software professional)..
Ppl (read snobbish DESI's) have a tendency to call Indian technies as code-coolies ! Well in a way it is.. but my question is, will you use the same term for all R&D jobs that are moving to India / China ?
Life is not a bed of roses, neither in India and neither in Canada ! YOu have to struggle wherever you are (in any part of the world)

Mr.India, having read this post as well as many other post in this forum, I simply have no words to appreciate the way u think, articulate and write in this board. Keep it up.
Meanwhile Can I call myself as Calender !!!!!!!
Regards
YOu have to define what is "cheap".. Give me a 60K INR pm salary in India today and I pack my bags and leave for India, right now !
60K/32 < 2K Can $ which is less than 24K per annum Canadian dollars !. Of cos I wont have health insuarnce in India..but thats a small penalty to pay.
I too was kinda disappointed by that APJ, but jokes apart, that is what one should be doing tthese days. I spend most of time scouting all those Indian job sites..esp MonsterIndia and others. Can you imagine, jobs in my field (multimedia/image processing) are aplenty in India...(which is quite a contrast from a few years ago when Ottawa as the leader in such jobs).
An international education has helped me hawk my skills in any corner of the world. Now if that happens to be my own country of birth, why not ? I am even contemplating of giving China a shot..'cos working in China in today's circumstances is indeed a challenge !.
New immigrants, who wish to come here should have access to as much information as possible. A person living comfortably in India, should not come here expecting to find a job easily. He/she should gather as much information as possible before making an informed choice. I came to Canada in 1998, with the hope of moving to the USA sometime afterwards.. Now that has all changed.. That's cos I have been able to make some informed decisions in the last couple of months.
I only wish I had access to such information when I first came here !
