I have 10 yrs plus of experience in Software in various Database related positions .
I was considering doing an MBA ... wondering if I do it in Finance ( my interest ) , will I be able to carve a career ahead bridging the two ie IT + Finance ?
Or with less opportunities for the combined skills , would I have to likely choose either IT or Finance ........ in which case , would I be better off now to do my MBA in IT itself or perhaps an M Sc / MCA or even a PhD ?
Opening this queston to the IT seniors on the forum ...... a step in the right direction now can result in great displacement 5 years hence ...... Are there enough opportunities for people who are skilled in IT & Finance (both advanced like a Finance / Data Architect combo and not ERP functional consultant level ) Thoughts please ?

You have to make a bold move, if you are quitting the current post. But if you are taking the slow route, then, decide for yourself, if the current employer will recognize your efforts and place you suitably into an higher post. Otherwise you end up loosing the current post and/or end up in a newer place, which seems likely.
Some employers encourage and also support these educational upgrades, and a few even fund their employees study and fees and the family members too. I do not know the current trend in the industry. Some did it before. So go through the Human Resources to get an idea. Doing a lunch with one there would not be a wasted effort.
Here is the current movement clock, PATHWAY, in the industry. See if it is the correct link for you. And Good Luck.

Thanks Freddie , I shall defintely look into the link provided .
If I have to make an MBA choice , I can either go into Finance or IT ....
There appears to be more opportunities if I stick on to my own turf but since I have deep interest in Finance , I wish I could learn of some opportunities which combine s/w & fin skills on an advanced level .
Are there any ?

The Schulich (York Univ) MBA gives many choices in electives that are geared towards combining It and Finance i.e specializing in "Financial Engineering". These include Advanced Spreadsheet Modeling & Programming for Business, Enterprise-wide Financial Risk Management etc. You can choose and combine your electives in any order based on your interests. . In fact, you may choose to do a stand alone financial engineering diploma which will be a lot less expensive than a conventional MBA

Continuing education is always a good thing. With complications in software incudstries and various patents, does it really makes sense to consider IT+Law? Of course a lot depends on one's interest but I think something that is a scarce resource at the moment. Not sure if there is such course/degree currently available.
