For the first 20-30 minutes, the movie didn't impress me as I was expecting it to be more of a comedy movie, the chatur's speech also didn't impress me that much.
As time passed, the movie did touch the raw nerve of the society, where the parents put all their burden on their kids for their future, if the parents are either well to do or a middle class then their zeal and interests are slapped on their kids. I don't deny that a kid of 10-12 year old will lack the judgment to hit the right track in life but an adult should not. Perhaps, this could be the reason many of my colleagues (mostly local) went to do their Engineering / Technical degree after struggling on their (after post school final) own, researched, found and pursued what is good for them.
The above two points were something I liked that this movie touched otherwise the college environment etc.., etc.., were not really any different from other usual Hindi flicks.
Why did they really need actors like Aamir, Karina, Madhavan etc., to me they didn't really fit much as they were looking much older for an Engineering student in the Indian environment, the producers could've spent on young new talented actors and invested in the marketing of the film.
Overall, I found the movie did highlight two issues in the society concerning the young generation, as the majority of the audience are of that age, it clicked commercially otherwise it is just like an ordinary good movie.
Once you are in Engineering, you wouldn't be part of any sports or what.. Another myth tied to the society back there.
I usually don't go to theater, I did go for this one due to the hype and my damage was close to 40 bucks.
If you haven't watched this movie, you could still watch it but you could obviously wait for the DVD.

Now this one is close to my heart... Why does it sound impossible to you. I've had a girl friend who was working as an intern after finishing up her medical studies...while I was still an engineering student.
Well, indeed I also enjoyed the movie. It is just that I was expecting the genre top be more of comedy (Nope, didn't look for logic) but ended up with a bit of comedy but mostly touched some interesting points. So overall, its good but I woudn't rate it as a funny movie, it could be a good movie with some funny scenes.
To me, movies mean same as what books, travel mean to some.

No puns intended. It's just a movie meant to entertain, and not a documentary or an art movie. So, if you're just going in for entertainment - I must say it's aplenty. But finding logic in movies is just like trying to find a long lost Dinosaur in 21st century.
Your points, however, are well taken. But I loved the movie in it's entirety

I felt the same in the movie where they were switching between both themes, but overall it wasn't bad. But it is definitely hyped.

Next time I will not get drawn into all the media hype about Aamir Khan movies. I liked his "Rang De.." and "Taare Zameen Par" and thought 3 Idiots might follow the same suit of intelligent movie making.

Meghal,
I like when you say -
"Take the character of Kareena out and you can still have a complete movie."
Funny thing is Kareena winning AWARDS even for such small & unimportant role
Anyway - I usually don't go to movies with any expectation.
I want entertainment & 3Idiots are Complete entertainment
If we start looking for loofholes, not a single hindi movie is complete
Even films which you mention like Kaminey, Dev D, Tara Jameen Pe or says Jane Bhi Do Yaaro, Katha are filled with number of loofholes
Important thing is -
First decide what you want to see in movie
If you want entertainment, just enjoy movie & forget abouts LOGICS etc
If you want reality, there are other sourses of media like Documentary, art movies but then don't expect them to entertain you & make you laugh.
Anyway - I always like your views on movies/ songs etc.
So keep on posting your views
