Gopal Pai,
Though I can understand your sincerity, With my past experience, I will have to advise caution.
All these jobs advertised are pucca labour jobs where you will be told to lift heavy weights, work non stop for extended period of times using repetative work, work in factories which are not (air) conditioned etc.... They can easily depress people in 1 day to a month dpending on the back ground of the person. You work these jobs through the agency and you wil have to enquire if they have confirmed people to the factories that they work for after a period of time (as they may change companies at the end of 6 months) . Otherwise you get no health benefits and in many cases you will not be eligible for EI (55% of your last drawn salary subject to a cap + generous study funding) as they will never lay you off but just change companies for you or make you quit by giving you some tough positions.
The person has to think twice before taking such labour jobs which are actually taken by people who have no education or skills and not for the highly educated and trained asian immigrant. Again many people in this forum may advise you to take these jobs and slog it out (to be positive) till you get a break. In reality, the only ones who gain would be the govt. which gets EI, CPP and taxes from your salary

Peace by TK

hi TK,

your sincerity and advise and guidance is so right. Though people may not like your advise or negativity but, you speak truth. That is what I like most, truth.

We have put so much effort to get job these last few months, which is reflected in our help. I don't want people to face difficulties what we faced that is why I am posting all my efforts on this forum. Now it is upto them to select the jobs they wish to do.

My husband initially had given test in these employment agencies before co-op programme and they are calling after 2 months which means maybe recession is lifting and jobs opportunities are available.

Sometimes, in order to survive, people have to take such jobs. My only advise is to those who are above 40's that they should not take such heavy jobs unless and until it is absolutely necessary. There are options open to all of us.

my intention is only to help.

P.S. YOU WILL GIVEN SIMPLE ARITHMETIC TEST IN THESE AGENCIES AND AFTER YOU CLEAR THIS TEST, THEY WILL ASK YOU TO SIGN CONTRACT IN WHICH IT IS CLEARLY SPECIFIED IF YOU HAVE TO LIFT 25 -40 LBS. EVEN IF YOU SIGN AND JOIN JOB AND REALISE YOU ARE HAVING HEALTH PROBLEM OR JOB IS NOT SUITABLE FOR YOU, STOP GOING NEXT DAY BUT INFORM THESE AGENCIES. YOU ARE UNDER NO OBLIGATION TO WORK HERE FOR LONG TERM.

I agree fully with tamilkuravan. Your intention might be laudable, but I wish it came with a word of caution. These are "labor" jobs, which involve repetitive lifting of heavy objects, or repetitive work involving the use of one or more arms. I sincerely hope you will see my post objectively, rather than as criticism.

first of all, I am sure a large number of Desi's are aware of these "agencies". I don't know if you are aware, they advertise for "administrative" and "customer service" positions, but when people go to register, they are offered only " labor jobs". These factories where people do these labor jobs are places where there is no place for a self respecting person of dignity. One one hand the "agency" as the middle person makes up to one third of the wages paid by the employer as their commission. Then there is till now, no statutory benefits, sick time or vacation time.

Now one may argue that it is better to do something to pay bills than to do nothing at all. True as that may be, one who works in these "labor jobs" can end up life long health issues like low back pain, tennis elbow, and herniated discs. The pain and suffering that can ensue can make life miserable.

I know that despite what I wrote, there still will be people taking up jobs in factories, involving heavy lifting or repetitive work. I know they think this is inevitable. Probably this is true. My heart goes out to them, for what might come to them, health-wise, in the years to come.

Let me also remind gopalpai. Low back pain, herniated discs and other injuries involving the muscles and bones can happen to anyone - even those under 40. Some of these conditions are work related.

Thanks TK and ILOVENA for highlighting the other side of the coin and the problems associated with these 'opportunities'.

This info may prove valuable for newcomers especially.

Cheers.:)

Dont you think there is dignity in all work - labour or otherwise? Yes for a person who is highly educated it is not where they likely want to be, but still there is nothing undignified about it.

Secondly, there are occupational hazards of traditional desk jobs such as :
Low back pain/disk herniation
Carpel Tunnel syndrome or other ergonomic issues
repetitive strain injuries
Visual impairment (from staring at computer all day)

Many labour jobs that exist can be light (ie/ lifting less than 20 lbs regularly), such as: packaging jobs, light assembly, retail, some stocking jobs, some production positions.

Morning_rain: I fully agree with you. There are some labour jobs which are advertised as 'light to medium' lifting (up to 20 lbs)/packing/order entry, etc

There is absolutely no harm in doing these jobs for few months. Just take precaution that you do not sign agreement stating 'heavy lifting'.

There is one more advantage in these jobs which nobody has mentioed earlier here. These jobs are STRESS FREE. This is a BIG PLUS for Indian IT professionals. (A stress free job for few months can recharge you more than you imagine).

Keep going and good luck.
