I am not in marketing guys!
The above message from someone - which I pasted - I don't know from whom it was!
I am a software developer.
As per my understanding MBA is not a must qualification for most of Management jobs. In fact I have seen very rare MBAs. You have to register as a fulltime student to get your MBA, I guess.
I have no much idea about marketing jobs here, but have seen new immigratns doing some kind of jobs - door-to-door marketing or as a sales-rep in computer/electronic departmental stores.
For computer/electronics stores - knowledge of Indian languages - Gujarati, Punjabi, Hindi, Urdu, Bangla, Tamil and ofcourse English is very good asset.

No offence to your profession. infact, It's a great achievement as you started off selling newspapers and now you are a VP in 3yrs making big bucks. I wish each immigrant achieves this success as you have in 3 yrs. But we are talking of hundreds of thousands of immigrants coming here every year in search for a better life. Guys like you can be easily counted among this mass immigrant population. Not everyone is as lucky as you are. How many of us have become VPs in 3yrs??
A person with Engg. background with MBA in mktg/finance who has spent a decade in industrial marketing is seeking advise. After assessing the market situation, do you think it is advisable to ask him to sell newpapers and other stuff over the phone or go door to door and face irate customers?? Do you visualize the difference in level of job he is presently doing and the above?? That too, just for the sake of sticking on to sales/mktg???
I would definately suggest this person to explore other fields first. Newly landed desis do the above jobs as they have no other choice. Upto some extent some telemarketing jobs are definately better than factory labor jobs.
as you rightly said we have to present a balanced true picture and not exceptions.
Thanks guju_canadien
Advice of you guys had indeed been very helpful. I am trying to explore alternative avenues also. Can anyone advice me what other avenues are
avilable for a person with my background.
Also kindly reply to my query on health care.
Thanks

Hi Vivek:
Your question:Also health care is free. What all is inclded in this. As in our country health care is supposed to be free if you go to a government hospital. But we all know how govt. hospital functions. How is it in canada.Kindly enlightn me.
Free medical care:
What is included is all Doctor & specialist visits. Though this is now being severely curtailed especially in BC. In BC there is a monthly fee for medical services which Alberta & Ontario dont have. This also includes any surgery for example - bypass- or kidney transplant - more serious stuff- is all covered. Your family doctor is your most important connection here. He will advise you and give you referrals. Which is why selection of a family Doctor is critical. So typically, you would go to your family doctor who would refer you to a specialist who would in turn decide whether any surgical intervention is required.
The next aspect of this is what is referred to as 'extended medical'. This is provided by the employer and is the next rung of medical care. This covers all your prescription drugs, eyeglasess and other specialised medical treatment like physiotherapy etc. You need to check with prospective employers what their plan covers. Some cover 100%. And some cover 80%. Most employers in Canada offer extended health to their employees. In the first few years, my compnay did not have it, but since my wife's company covered 100% we did not worry!
Now coming to your next query:
Videshee Bhai can u advise me what should I do to upgrade my marketing skills apart from adapting to North American accent.(Which ofcourse can be done only when I land up there.)
Unfortunately, not a lot. However upgrading computer skills is always usefull. Contact database systems like Maximiser, ACT etc are critical for a sales/marketing function. I dont really know what your particular skill set includes, but I would try to add as much experience in new technologies as is possible.
Vivek, my take on Canda, for what its worth is that we are starting all over again. From scratch. Some settle in faster, but eventually everyone does. Your first year is hell! Be prepared. What is critical is a firm resolve to succeed. Though today I am well setlled, the days of walking in the cold rain without warm clothing will not fade easily from my mind! I pounded the streets. Got rejection. Shrugged and moved on. It all becomes worth it at some stage.
Do let me know if I can provide you with additional information.
Best wishes
Videsee
To my friend Guju Canadien.
Mon ami, let us agree to disagree!
You feel "Marketing is not recommended as it is not in favor of your family, financially and socially."
I disagree!
What do you mean by social acceptance? To me as long as I earn an honest dollar, I give a damn about 'social acceptance'!
Social acceptance depends to a large part on the individual. To me, a bankers job is boring. To me a 'drug dealers' job is unacceptable. Personally, I think NO legitimate job is unacceptable as long as it puts food on the table for my family!
But that is where we disagree! For me marketing is my 'rozi'. I am proud to be in it. I excel in it. Do I care for detractors?
NO!
You feel a person with an Engg. background with MBA in mktg/finance who has spent a decade in industrial marketing should switch jobs.
I disagree. It may take time. But he will get a job that requires his skills. Why would he throw away 10 years of experience? I know a person who sat at home for six months determined to land that job that he had trained for. It took him six months. He lost out on potential income. But he DID get that job.
I hope you will not say that this person too, like me, is an exception. Trust me my friend, I have seen several immigrants coming to Canada. I am NOT an armchair critic. I work weekends as a volunteer for new immigrants, actually 'adopting' them during their initial days.
I agree one must be flexible in a new country. But why would one start by accepting defeat?
Giving up what you have learnt is an easy option.
At least let Vivek try it out for a couple of months. Give it a shot. You never know, he might get lucky!
Rather than prepare him for failure, let him at least TRY for success?!
