I want to move to an apartment, where we have to use common laundry, which we don't like to use. Can we get any washer/dryer combo (portable) to put it there and which is the good one and where it will be available. There are no hook ups to permanently fix them. We have to drag it to sink and put exhaust over window. Is there any easy way to sort this problem? Suggestions are welcome.

This is a very tricky question.

First the CONDO rules should permit your installation of washer and drier. If not it will be unwanted trouble.

You will be stopped by your Super when you book your elevator for taking the duo into your apartment.

If you bypass her/him and still take your stuff into your apartment when the drier runs in the night you neighbours will definitely complain to the building super.

This will lead to bad scene.

The next thing the most important is that except 2 models ALL the Driers come with a 220V plug and not a 110V plug. Eventhough the washer is 110V the heavy duty drier requires 220V plug. Typically in your apartment there will be only ONE 220V plug for your Cooking Range.

Hence where will you put your drier ?.

The next issue is that if you by the small washer drier combo from Zellers, Sears or even Walmart which typically costs around 1000 bucks the size and and the effectiveness of the drier is quite low. Maybe you could dry a few socks and underwear at a time. And again if you run it continously your power will be tripping.

Even if you put in small quantities at a time you can use it only in days and not in nights as your neighbours will complain.

Lastly you could use a pantyhose or some put a tube(a kit is available in HomeDepot) for exhausting the hot air vent and catch the lint in a bucket.

In older apartments there is a vent to take cooking stuff in the kitchen above the range. If you have that stuff then you can run your exhaust into it.

My friends wife ran the drier with some clothing with plastic in it and it burnt and the whole kitchen was filled with smoke, the smoke alarm went off and at the end of the day the whole apartment complex knew that an Indian family had a illegal washer drier in the apartment.

At the end of the day you need to study if it is all worth the effort.

My take buy a nice samsung,LG or a Daewoo washer and run it in your apartment and use the mega size drier in your laundry room.

MY 3 Cents !.

Another option for you is to choose commerical laundry like coin laundry etc. The washer and dryer are generally very good as its for commercial. We generally go when we have big load like comforters etc and they have huge machine.

If you are not choosing your appartment laundry because of senitory reason the other than above post, I also dout.

Good if you can rent smaller town house. They have generally laundry inside the house.

Thanks Vandemataram and Americanchai for your inputs. I heard horrible stories about common laundry in apartment complexes. Some people lost their garments and many people put shoes (even dog poo). But I have no choice except staying there due to my job.

Can you take a portable dvd player or a book and find somewhere to sit and watch your laundry. its an inconvenience for sure
