Hi Manjeet,

I have 2 bed room appartment on Don-Mills- Eglington . The building is very well mantained and recently renovated with indoor swimming pool and sauna. It is close to Indian grocery and Indian restaurants.TTC, School, library, resource center, shopping complex within 5 minutes walking distance. The rent is CAD-1,050, including utlities.
Actually my husband has found a job in Alberta so we are moving in May, so in case you are looking for renting for long term and since you are new immigrant this place will be very suitable for you.
So get in touch with me when you land in toronto in case you are interested. My telephone number is 416-425-4106

Shefali

For a new immigrants don't you think this rent is too much... if someone have this much money to spend on rent I would suggest go and buy the house.

Thanks and regards.

Ya, you are right, may be, this rent is a bit high for new immigrant but at the same time if you are coming here with your family and if you have kids then this is the bare minimum i believe you have to spend. I am also a new immigrant, I came here last year and took up this appartment for rent and realised that this community is very suitable for new immigrant because they have lots of free facilities available at the local resource center and school. For eg, if both husband and wife want to work then there is an after school program avalable where your kid can stay will 5:30 after he/she finishes his school and it is available for free and kids really enjoy being there, they also provide them with snacks. At community center swimming , tennis and art lessons are free .
So basically i feel the rent might be little higher but then lots of other facilities available here which can make your life very comfortable as a new immigrant.
And as far as you sayab buying your own house with that money, so for that I believe it is very hard to decided where you would want to live permenantly in your first year in this country so anyways you have to rent a house for the first year before you decide the area and other stuff.

biomed, I agree, the rent is pricey for an older apartment and esp for a new immigrant, but if it includes utilities and is spick and span it could possibly be acceptable. I donno...

That said, I'm paying $1,450 pm plus utilities, but it's for new construction. Our total monthly lodging expense comes to about $1,800 adding in just a basic phone line ($60), heat ($100), electric($70) and water ($100). I don't know how much our A/C bills are gonna be in summer and am just dreading that! Still, I know that's considered high for just two people around these parts, but that's what we're paying and think it's worth it for a good place. Every other place we have seen in this city just reminds me of municipal housing, what we in the US call "projects". It's very saddening.

When we first moved here, we stayed at the Radisson for a month while searching for a nice place to live. Everyday we sallied forth from the hotel room armed with glossy brochures fawning over buildings and their ameneties, only to come back very disheartened. Turned out the hotel was a much better option than most places and the cost was about equal! (We had worked out a weekly rate with the hotel which was cheaper than paying by the day). Anyway, in the end, we decided to stick to brand new buildings only, which are really rare in this city so we're counting our blessings. Reason being, most of the cheaper places were REALLY sleazy... eg. a one or two bedroom for $950 or even $1,200 including utilities, and u can hear rats walking the floorboards! Or the water faucet doesn't work, or drips, or the paint chips or the building is not well-maintained or the neighbors are noisy etc.... I was and still am really surprised by the poor quality of housing in Toronto. Is this the norm around here? In the US we paid the same amount in mortgage or rent wherever we lived, so that's ok, but we had a LOT more options for good quality housing, and a lot of new construction to choose from. Plus, if buildings said they were "recently remodeled", they really were recently remodeled. Here, we found out "recently remodeled" means atleast five years ago!!

Now we're thinking of buying a house again, but don't know if we can get anything brand new for a mortgage of about $1,500 a month. That's the max I want to be able to afford right now and I don't want to go for older housing coz just looking at the state of apartment facilities here I know we're not going to have a pleasant experience with an older house. Any advice?

Hi all
I look out for expert advice from CD seniors. I am planning to land in Mid April and i am thinking of taking up "bed and breakfast" accomodation initially for at least 2 weeks to lookout for permanent accomodation after landing.

Has anybody got any experience with such arrangements ? i have got rates of cad 350 for a week from castlegate Inn

http://www.castlegateinn.com

If anyone has any information about the quality of such accomodations kindly put in your views as it can be very helpful.

Thanks in Advance...

yup, we stayed at a B&B last year (honeymooning :) ), it was quaint... a bit oldish but that's what all B&Bs around here are like. If u r into antique furnishings, those type of places are ideal. They have a lot of culture. The food at B&Bs tho is iffy... if u like bland, eat there. If u like desi, eat out. Breakfast is usually the high point of their meals... nice variety of spreads. :)
