This perhaps one of the most interesting election I've ever observed. Many parties / individuals with strong agenda have lost completely. Similarly, parties and individuals with emotion focused agenda have also lost.

This election has made things clear that the public is now very aware, parties have to have agenda for the development of day to day life in place of just feeding frenzy.

Parties like PMK, Lalu et al, various religious / caste based parties have bitten the dust.

The Sri Lankan cause agenda also did not workout in Tamil Nadu, though JJ swung from being staunch SL opposer to supporter did not favor her.

It is very surprising to see that there aren't much discussions / thread about the pre / post elections 2009.

Why congress won ?

Why BJP lost ?

Why communist lost this badly ?

Why people like Mayawati / Mulayam / Lalu couldn't bring a huge change as much they were dreaming ?

Did you follow the Lok sabha elections closely?. According to a report, "The number of criminal-turned-Members of Parliament has increased from 128 to 150, when compared to the 2004 elections." Here is the link from Rediff.

Even now, money power runs wild. Rs. 100 per vote was common. Rural areas are prone to it. Voters in cities called it right, to some extent. JJ and Mayawati are female goons and behaved out of control. They got drubbing in cities. When BJP announced that they will send troops across the border, that may have sent wrong signals to educated voters who thought that it could lead to a war. Adding to that was the Varun Gandhi's ire against Muslims. Raj Thackrey split the votes in Maharashtra. Chiranjeevi made a fool of himself.

Overall, educated voters were looking for stability. Still DMK and SP will create trouble, that's what they do. Hopefully Chidu and MMS will get things done wrt reforms (Chidu almost lost the election, won after two recounts). Since elections took place in different phases, security was tight.

The election result just proves how resilient our country is. Even after the deadly attack in Mumbai our people kept their sense and voted intelligently. Here are the signs of great society that will prosper come what may. Long live India and may her people get all the peace and honesty they deserve.

Congress(I) winning this election was a forgone conclusion. BUT they sweeping this election is what is a surprise.

The logic as per a Fellow CD "REALONE" which I feel is right is that, when India rode the global economic wave it was perceived as the making of Congress in India. As things are going down in India along with the whole world they think Congress is needed to stabilize and give India the same growth. This is a vote for Manmohan Singh and his fellow cabinet members who are perceived as the creators of this economic wealth. Unfortunately this perception might not be so correct.

Another thing was there is a thirst for stability at the cost of terrorism or other issues. This need for stability is seen by the total negation of the communists who are perceived as anti-nuclear or anti-US. This vote is also for a pro US stance which is taken by the Congress government.

For the pessimists how long can this global economic wave be driven \as the US economy is in dumps and whether it will revive to its past glory is a mute question.

India should need to change its foreign policy to a pro China, Russia and other South American country policy. US's economy is in deep trouble with cosmetic results coming out, the Medicaid & Social Security will be running dry in the next 2 decades.

India needs trillions for upgrading its infrastructure and also its economy. The only country that has so much is China unlike US. If Rahul Vinci can be the next PM and he can do the same magic as Manmohan Singh it'll be a real confirmation of India's vote.

The secondary reason for BJP's defeat(eventhough they have not really lost seats compared to the last election) is lack of pro-Growth leadership in its party. There are no english savvy/business oriented leaders in BJP as seen in an all India context. Eventhough every businessman wants Narendra Modi to be the next PM and also the only other guy who can have a national attention is Arun Jaitley. The Rajnath Singhs and Advanis's are not perceived as a young and dynamic.

But I will not count out the Dalit Power represented by the Mayavatis as it now in the back simmer but will explode when the governments will not be able to deliver the economic expectations.

The one thing I'm really excited by this results is the total defeat of the Eelam cause by the Tamilnadu voters. This result in Tamilnadu after the Bharathi Rajas, Seemans, Amirs and R.K.Selvamani's with the PMK/Periyar DK's virulent campaign has been totally negated by the people of Tamilnadu.

This was said all along by Cho, N.Ram, Subramanian Swamy while others were lampooning their assessment. These guys stand vicotorious for their correct assesment of the situation.

This now will lead the way for Mr.M.K.Stalin to be coronated as the next CM of Tamilnadu.

In the side a small side story:

I had met this south Indian gentleman who runs a ticketing agency in the Airport road near Pearson airport. He was mentioning that he used to work for an agency in India which was responsible for all the Congress party and in turn the government of India ticketing during the late 1980's and early 1990's. Once a 10 member delegation under the FM Manmohan Singh was travelling to Geneva for some high level discussions. Mr.Manmohan Singh was travelling in Business class while the rest of the secrataries were travelling by economy class. The ticketing guys got instruction from the Congress party that Manmohan's ticket should be upgraded to First Class, while the others should be upgraded to Business. It was promptly done and when this gentleman went to hand over the ticket to Manmohans assisstant at the airport, Manmohan who was standing next took the boarding card and saw that his read first class. He immediately asked how it was done as he was enttitled for Business only. When our friend mentioned it was done as per order(s), he immediately asked his fellow travellers to return their boarding passes and he asked them to be Reverted back to the original classes. This story was mentioned for the personal honesty of this man, unlike the party.

It is said that even now he has minimal help staff in his home and his wife cooks dinners for him everynight. He was also using his Maruti 800 which he had to give up on security concern. May be this guy being a honest guy is something which keeps the government going.

On May 18, ISKCON News Weekly received a distraught message from an obviously emotional monk at ISKCON’s Nandankanan Sri Sri Gour Nitai Ashram in Chittagong, the main seaport of Bangladesh.

On May 14 at 3pm, the devotee said, he and his peers were busy preparing for a weekend festival when fifty to sixty terrorists burst into the temple, brandishing knives and iron bars. They first destroyed the kitchens, devotee accommodation, and Gaura Nitai deities. Then, as the devotees ran into the temple courtyard in a panic, the attackers poured boiling water on them from the balcony, badly burning many.

The terrorists also stole ten to twelve thousand taka (Bangladesh’s monetary unit) from the temple donation box, as well as a further ten thousand from individual residents. Devotees phoned the nearby police station again and again, but to no avail.

“Their negligence of duty came at a terrible cost,” Chinmoydham Dasa said in his message to ISKCON News. “Many devotees were injured and had to be brought to the hospital’s emergency room.”

By the time the police finally arrived, the terrorists had caused 80,000 laka worth of damage. Neither did they seem remotely intimidated by the presence of law enforcement. And it was soon clear why. When the terrorists threatened the devotees, “You must all leave now and hand the temple over to us!” the police remained silent, not voicing any defense.

We cannot say that we have reached the abyss for sure with respect to Indian democracy ever since the Indira Gandhi days. The latest is that after the elections were over the DMK chief along with his extended family members travelled all the way to Delhi, inspite of his old age and ill-health and sought and won ministership for all his family members. If at all there is an award for a family head who has fully taken care of all the needs of his family members, Mr. Karnunanidhi will hands down. In Tamil we say "Aasai Vetkam Ariyadhu" (Desire does not understand shame), which the party chief has clearly demonstrated.

I like this post by TVR Shenoy...exactly my confusion while I was in India and trying to make sense of politics and Govt.

http://www.rediff.com/news/column/2009/jun/02/the-muddle-of-the-govts-portfolios.htm

The basic Civics lessons we were taught in our school curriculum had nothing of this mentioned...
