1. Are you a permanent full time employee of the bank? If yes pursue the matter. If you are an agency hire, the banks would shrug it off and only empathise with you. Which they have done now.

2. These type of remarks are typical when you work in a in or out bound call centre. And believe me it is not only South Asians, Chinese or Africans who are subject to such remarks. My colleagues who are Irish, British, French, Greek and East European have faced such similar customers. It has nothing to do with you or anyone it is just the a**h*** on the other side who has less breeding. And those a**h***s can be from any part of the world.

3. It also depends on who the customer was. Is he a regular offender? Does your bank have a system to make notes on a particular customer. May be you can check that out and show the notes to your manager.

TK - No manager ever has the access to erase a recorded call. So please refrain from these "gora" comments. Do not comment just to sensationalize things.

recently while on a call a cx called me F***ing Paki. The customer said this without any provocation from my side.

I have never felt so hurt and humiliated before, considering that I am a middle age family man from a decent background, it was like somebody has slapped me on face. I brought this to the attention of my team leader but her attitude was, well-too-bad-dont-take-it-personally.

I was kept thinking that should I take this as an extra perk of doing a job, assuming I dont have any safeguards. Do I have any recourse. Couple of my colleagues said just forget it, no use taking any punga in this kind of economic scenario, just keep your job safe. This incident has shaken me. The calls are recorded so there is evidence of this abuse.

Should I escalate it, Do I contact any govt agency, Please guide me if you have any idea as what should I DO????????????????

I think most of immigrants who have stayed in Canada for sometime has or will experience this sort encounter.

I thought earlier that racism doesn't exist here as I had never experienced it first hand. That changed when my wife was alone in her store and had two individuals on separate occasions refer to us as Paki "bad for the environment and poor for the neighborhood". My wife called me and my punjabi blood was all boiling to burn the place down. On first occasion we reported it to the police (they never came). Then i emailed across the community to highlight the issue. Many sympathised with us but then there was no concrete action (now i think about it, what could they do?). For weeks I was keeping my Sherlock homes instinct on to trace those racists.

As of now, I think I have realized that its fact that there are many people who are just asses. I accept it and keep my defenses ready. Is it unusual? not really. I have lived in middle east and there you face different level of racism. I have Jewish and chec friends and as they put it that canada is as best as it gets.

Like many said earlier, don't take it personally. Be prepared for next time. Other options are not worth the effort. I can understand why police didn't come. They have more urgent things to address.

Its sad but don't forget all the good people you have met here which makes this country great.

I think this word originated in the UK and somehow spilled over into Canada.

... So, by and large, advise to OP is Forget (and forgive)/ don't take it personally/ it happens and all that sort. This is really not good to take such humiliation as such. It disturbs peace of mind and day to day life for some time. Canadian laws also do not promote 'Racism' of any kind. This is an 'Equal Opportunity' country. Blah Blah Blah ...

But I would (also) say, better forget this. Nothing (concrete) will come out and job situations are real bad. I experienced it many times at a work place (construction site), the first time I reacted was last day of my job.

-Ben
