I have never visited Vancouver and my analysis is based on what I have read and known from others . Toronto , Montreal & Vancouver are the leading cities and one should be able to find employment easily in either of these .

I have myself landed a job in a place other than Toronto - which means that immigrants do get jobs elsewhere - nobody questioned that .

The point of discussion was / is - which city has the best propensity to help a new immigrant land ... relative to each other ... exceptions do not make the rule !

Vancouver has much better climate and scenes than any other place in Canada .. still leading number of immigrants land in Toronto ... why ?

Because Toronto is the business leader in Canada . More businesses , higher economy , more jobs and possibility to grow (not talking abt recession but in general ) ... Better business centers in the world attract better professionals who provide better service making the economy grow in all round manner ....... More secondary employment and the cyclical effect ..... hence world wide business centers are the proponents of growth .............Toronto remains the financial centre of Canada, with the highest concentration of head offices and manufacturing .

With the growth in population , support services are also better which is in terms of longer hours of transit services , more immigrant centers , more acceptance to new immigrants and the ilk ...... since more immigrants mean more provincial taxes , better services are provided ... found snow removal to be more efficient in toronto then in Halifax .

With a bigger expanse of size of the GTA the number of jobs and opportunities also increases exponentially . Its like comparing 2 cities to one .

Somebody said ghetto .......... if Toronto is a ghetto then what is multiculturalism ?:). Toronto with its diversity of different nationalities reflects real intended Canada .

More drugs (and related killings as observed recently ) . car thefts , gang violence , poverty in Vancouver ... remember drugs and poverty is a lethal combination for crime ....... more car thefts in Van than any where else ............

Toronto has a cheaper cost of living as compared to Van ... I have heard that average home costs are 30% higher than Toronto .

Although the above statistics may change the bottom line remains .... ,ore business , growth in economy and better wages . Of course recession reverses this bit recession does not last majority of the time .

An interesting read ..... a 2001 survey comparing Torotno / Montreal & Vancouver .............. facts and figures ...

I concluded its because of a massive competition in GTA (every immigrant lands there), whereas in Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Sask where immigrants' don't move often and with less number of resume on employer's desk, it's easier to get noticed. Virtually everyone I met here in BC first landed in GTA and then due to the overwhelming competition, moved here and found jobs in their respective fields. So, experience speaks volumes and take from one who has lived in GTA as well as Metro Vancouver.

You have a point but in IT ..... hmmm

It depends, but maybe its the ghetto effect? We have that here in BC - Surrey and Richmond are a prime example.

Your competition for each available job also increases exponentially.

Multiculturalism is defined as: "where several different cultures can coexist peacefully and equitably in a single country".

Ghetto is defined as I mentioned earlier: "A quarter of a city in which members of a minority group live especially because of social, legal or economic pressure."

I did not say Toronto is a ghetto, I said it can become one. I am sure there are pockets of 'ghetto's' everywhere in GTA. As elsewhere. Even winnipeg (a small city with a population of just under 700K has little ethnic enclaves, or ghettos.

Toronto however is not the only place with a diverse population. Services are offered in direct proportion to the needs of the local population.

Multiculturalism is a concept, an ideal.
Ghetto is a perceptible reality.
It's not an either/or situation - in most cities in the world, it is both.
Toronto (or Vancouver, for that matter) are multi-cultural AND have ghettos, so does every other major city in the world where a lot of immigrants live.
London and Paris being other prime examples.

Even in a country like India, you could call certain areas in the big cities as ghettos - instead of being ghettos of people from other countries, they are ghettos of people from the same state or religion.

Using an example from Delhi (city that I am most familiar with), would you call a town like C.R. Park a ghetto of Bengalis since > 90% of the residents there are from Bengal?
They seldom need to venture out of there since they can find all their ethnic food, entertainment and society within the confines of the town.
Similarly, would Lajpat Nagar be a ghetto of Punjabis?
Historically, the fleeing refugees from Punjab during the partition in 1947 were given plots of land in and around Lajpat Nagar by the then Indian Govt.
That's how that ghetto was created.

At the same time, I think Delhi fully qualifies as a multi-cultural city.

Peaceful coexistence - you would be hard pressed to find that anywhere these days.
Peaceful is a relative term now.

Excellent thoughts friends - my plan is to study 'Logistics and supply chain mgmt' in toronto , I am 30 and single. B'coz of immigration i have delayed my marriage plan (there always a cost when u immigrate)

Plan is to make a decent living and do a PT job while studying, as some one mentioned about competition in GTA, that's true, I met few HR managers at job fairs in toronto and they said they hire through references, I feel applying from websites like workopolis, monster, jobbank is the worst option

Thanks to AV Canada for starting off this thread and thanks to all the CD's who put down their valuable thoughts/advice.

I am a would-be immigrant planning to land soon with my family (wife and two children).

I was considering Calgary/Edmonton, Vancouver and Toronto for my landing. After following the discussions, now I have more or less made up my mind. I am going for Toronto.

As somebody has noted, it is not without reason that so many immigrants choose Toronto compared to other cities. No offence intended to supporters of other cities.

Though this is not the best of times to come to Canada, I have my own reasons for my decision.

Thanks a lot.

Cheers.;)
