Why are you looking for survival job only.
You should look for the place/city where you have more opportunities in your field or where you want to go to school.
If your only criteria is survival job, you should pack your bags and land in Vancouver. Why slog in extremely cold weather (in Toronto) if your only criteria is survival job.
Vancouver is expensive than Toronto. You should not have problem in finding survival job in Vancouver (though situation is not good in general --- whether Toronto or Vancouver).
I think that you should land in the city where you have more opportunities in your field of expertise (instead of more survival jobs).
Guys, take a chill pill. Please remember that GTA is not the centre of the universe and the only place in Canada. GTA doesn't and won't constitute Canada. I am neither for nor against any one province/city/town, but remember this always - the more the people concentrate in one city, the more competition will it create, thus a major headache to obtain a job in your field. Even a survival one. Not one city/town/province can accomodate all the immigrants and provide jobs in their respective fields.
I completely agree with 'Ash' that one shouldn't look for a mere survival job, but what interest you. Keep your options open, adapt the country and it's people (not just Desi's) wherever you live. I am not an expert but this will certainly helpful in developing your personality, communication skills, outlook etc. in a new country.
Someone said about manufacturing industry of Ontario. The whole Canada is well aware that this manufacturing industry is the only one hard hit by this recession. Do I need to say more?
Again, I am not against GTA. But looks like this site has more GTA'ians and obviously they fail to see beyond GTA in Canada.
Last but not the least - I personally like Toronto more than anywhere else in Canada, but my views are unbiased.
Oh! By the way, last I checked Vancouver is counted among the big cities of Canada (in the league of Toronto, but certainly not a town).

Even when manufacturing jobs are Zero here, you may still stand a better chance here than the rest of Canada.

I donot think so. Desi's are not fools to stick around in a place where there is no action / benefit.

Who said it is not. We are talking about the chance of getting a decent survival job as well as future job in his chosen profession.

I am a Gents and not a Ladies.
I landed in the GTA and got my first job out of it - relocated and realized that the center of business in Canada is Toronto ....... akin to Mumbai and New York ..... also realized that chances of growth due to concentration of business are multiples than any other place .
Plus also found that since most immigrants land in the GTA the place has got the best structure / services / facilities for new immigrants hence the most immigrant friendly city . Otherwise why would Vancouver not be the leading immigrant landing city despite its wonderful climate ?
Had a choice b/w Vancouver and GTA some time back and decided for GTA due to the fact that job growth possibility is higher here for above factors .
Whereas one can and does get a job any where in Canada , the possibility and probability of getting it is higher in the GTA --- I have no bias for Toronto , just stating the facts .

Here's a picture. I landed in Toronto couple of years ago with the hope to find job in my field, i.e. IT. Just like everyone else does, I used to send at least 50 resume everyday, network, meet agency reps, and what not. The result was '0'. No response from the companies, not even a telephonic interview call. I then landed up a call-centre job at a minimum wage (not even survival one). After about 10 frustrating months of trying in GTA, I thought to try in Vancouver, took a plunge, and packed my bags by taking days off from my then existing workplace.
Although, I admit I didn't like Vancouver vis-a-vis GTA, I landed up a decent paying job in a well renowned US company that would reflect pretty good in my resume. That too within a month. So, figure.
Over the years, I met numerous immigrant professionals who landed up jobs(good survival and their own fields) in Vancouver in relatively less time than anywhere else. I concluded its because of a massive competition in GTA (every immigrant lands there), whereas in Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Sask where immigrants' don't move often and with less number of resume on employer's desk, it's easier to get noticed. Virtually everyone I met here in BC first landed in GTA and then due to the overwhelming competition, moved here and found jobs in their respective fields. So, experience speaks volumes and take from one who has lived in GTA as well as Metro Vancouver.
Immigrant services/structures/facilities are available everywhere in Canada. That's why these cities are known as big cities of Canada. Here in Vancouver, there's no dearth of full fledge Libraries with free internet connection, employment resource centres, immigrant centres, decent public transport with trains connecting each suburb, and a lot of service/manufacturing companies (though GTA has an edge- but again with competition, that also evens out).
I admint, it's subjective. But, call a spade a spade.
