Hello Desi's,

I am looking for a first job here.

I am an engineer and PMP certified. I was interviewed on telephone by Vice President of one Company in Toronto for a Project Manager Position.

I am not in IT but in Engineering & Construction.

The person who spoke to me over phone seem to be satisfied with the conversation and asked me finally what salary you expect.

I said i have thoroughly researched the Company and looking for career oriented position and expect salary in certain range.

He said he will call me again for a personal interview.

Guys, please put your ideas and canadian experience here to answer my following querries:

1) Salary which can be offered for Project Manager position.

2) What other normal benifits that i should confirm the employer, like medical for self and family, bonus?

3) Transportation? This i am asking b'cos the position requires travel to job sites at times.

4) International travel?

Thanks in advance.

Good idea is to ask details about "other benefits" at the time of offer negotiation.
Usually benefits includes medical for employee, spouse and children. It is possible that you might have to pay a small amount for the coverage. Many companies also have 2-3 levels of medical and you pay as per your "levels" or coverage. For 90% medical coverage you pay more, lil less for say 80%, and free for 50% coverage.

Some companies also have employeer RRSP contribution. Could be anywhere from 1% to 5% - again, this depends a lot on the company. But usually these are standard benefits and negotiation over these is usually very tough. - take it or leave it type.

Other benefits might include: paid vacation (anywhere from 2 wk to 4-5wk - depending on your position), bonus (you might get this included in your offer letter or might not). Other benefits might be company specifiy - like Rogers might give you home phone for ultra low rates.

Usually these are covered by company - unless the expenses are considered and added to your salary/rate at the time you start.

Depends on the company. But you should not worry, usually all business related expenses are covered by the company.

I can't tell anything about the salary range. It highly depends on your experience/education/skills. Usually when company is ready with offer, they don't let go the candidate just for $s. But again, don't let the offer go just coz of $s.

My rule: few $s does not really matters. If you love the work, your company will compensate fairly, might take 6 months, but fairly.
And, a bird in hand is worth more than 2 in bush .. or whatever it's said as ..

Good luck.

Silly me.

RRSP = Something like Canadian version of Pension plan.
check this link for approximate taxes - it will tell you how much approximately you'll get on hand after your taxes.

I've been through this situation recently and took my first job in Canada so I can understand how you feel.

My suggestion is - do not talk about the salary until much much later. Rationale -
1. the later you put off the salary dscussions, the more time and effort the hiring manager has put into your hiring and will be less inclined (at a later date) to look elsewhere.
2. the more time you discuss the position, the more info you can get on the company, its benefits, salaries etc. You can also network around and get more info.
3. job descriptions can evolve - especially for experienced professionals. So the more you discuss, you might be able to nudge the ob description in your favour and thus move yourself up the salary scale.

Good luck!!!

I would say that I am considering not just salary but a good opportunity. I will consider any offer you make seriously and get back if I have any questions.

You have already given a range and they are still talking to you, so you are withing their range too.

As others have mentioned, now reel them in. Let them give you a figure, you keep talking of the firm, the job, opportunity etc.

With luck, you will get an offer. At that time, ask for some time, or if you are prepared, ask for total compensation(benefits etc.).

Then decide if you want to push them on salary or something else. Be reasonable, it is a tough market, and at that point they will want to close too, and the will be reasonable too, most likely.

Good luck.
