ERC INTERVIEW FOR P.ENG

Hi,

I have being recently advised to attend a ERC interview for P.eng licensing in Ontario. I would like to know if anyone has attended this interview? What type of questions can I anticipate? Do they ask questions related to my work experience or do they ask all the fundamentals?

I would greatly appreciate if someone can help me out

Albert

I attended this interview about 8 years back in Toronto in Electircal engineering descipline. I prepared 2 -3 projects. There were about 4 people in the interview committee. They asked me about the projects that I handled. Just remember one thing, what ever you say it should be always about you and nothing about the team you worked with. Highlight on the engineering principles that you used and why it was required. Hope this helps.

Good luck.

To add to previous comment.

This is purely a technical interview. ERC needs to know which enginering principles you applied in your job and how, as well as how good you are at expressing yourself in English language.

Pick 2-3 projects that you have done, including calculations-equations used to in case you designed anything. Also, you need to know all the parameters in equations that you used.

For example, I was asked about heat exchanger and pipeline sizing

Hello Everyone..!!!!

I request all to share your ERC interview experience. I am basically looking for info on following aspects:
- Interview Duration
- No. of Experience summaries Covered
- Did interviewer ask questions on Work Experience Summary other than the ones or twos you prepared?
- Difficulty Level of interview - the questions were basic or in-depth detailed ones?
- Should I concentrate more on the equation / numbers or should I more concentrate on the overall engineering process / principle ?

I would appreciate your efforts if you could share your experience please.

P.Eng.,

It is a common practice when you apply for an enrollment into P.Eng., to provide
them with two of your projects, that you yourself got them up from the start and
how it progressed with all of the details etc., and costs if known. You provide
them with all or most of the details, either in an abridged format or a full version
of it with all of the rules and regulations followed, and the safety practices too.
You can submit with the same, just a few details to maintain some privacy or
you can provide them with all of the details and a caveat at the bottom of the
submission.

This is for EACH of the projects you helped or got to complete in your earlier Posts.

Now having the bull by the horn, YOU are the one that determines how long you
want to drag your presentation. If i were you, I will limit it to FIFTY Minutes each
with a question period of TEN Minutes and complete the presentation at the time
of the Interview. You can carry with you all of the formulae that you used in your
calculations and the Cost Accounting that was done prior to and the over run etc.,
at the presentation.

You are the Presenter and the Master of Ceremonies at this juncture and you rule
the roost.

Normal group at this session will be about FOUR, unless it is a Major project such
as Atomic Power Generation or Solar Cell Plant for Fuel Oil heating etc., as built at
a few of the locations that I know. Any minor projects will be evaluated on the spot.
The full quorum could be SEVEN of the peers.

All of the detailed queries will be based upon the highest level of Engineering with
all of your bloopers that will get exposed and you will be put on stand to answer
to the shortcomings, if did notice any and your response to it.

In my opinion you should approach a group of your peers prior to submission and
it this opportunity has been missed, then a review with your substantiation of the
procedures followed and why, prior to your visit to P.Eng., interview. This is to
provide you with an advance level of coaching prior to that date.

Now, you have been informed properly of the procedures, if you did not know them
before.

FH.

Please post your experiences for others to get to know about it.

Work a little bit harder this time. It is well worth it.

If your submissions are with all of the detailed facts on the project, either helping some one OR you are the primarily in charge of it and are with all of the details, then a power point may not be the format. If it was a totally new project, starting from the Ground and Up and calls for a power point presentation, your submission will call for and is there by indicated as such in your submission with materials to support the same. Your Formula used and the calculations and the results derived will be in the presentation.

At that juncture, if there are cost estimates are done and adhered to, you can also show them in the same format. So, all of the sensitive materials will be in your possession and will be available only in a display mode at the presentation.

Any trials and subsequent run of the equipment with readings and fine tuning of the same will be in your possession as LOG sheets. Plus this detail that you have on you will be to your personal benefit and will also indicate your abilities in its start up and the methods you used in arriving at those sensitive tuning of the project to derive the designed efficiency. In furtherance you can stand behind this project and claim that it has been running at a steady state for a very long period at that location without any problems or any incidences during that time period.

A few can reproduce the same from their memory banks and a few can produce documents to back their claim and a few can also show from the financial statements or Balance Sheets to prove their efficiency. The choice is yours, as most of us will lack a lot of details about these, so, see how you can get over it. Because no one expects to uproot themselves to a distant location and after arriving here, once again trying to settle down and seek an entry into a New Professional Group. And perchance you do not come upto their expectations, then get back to basics or for that matter to a drawing board to start all over again.

Now, you are at this specific point in your career which I will name it as a predicament point. Please see how you can get over it with a little bit of tact. You need to work a lot harder this time to stand up be counted as a worthy candidate.

Good Luck.

FH.
