My friend has been travelling between US and Canada very frequently and uses Rogers North-american plan to make calls from States to Canada..
I am sure there would be some more cost effective ways to make phone calls to Canada... one option that comes to my mind is to use "calling card with unlocked cell phones".... Do you guys think that is possible.. if yes, can you suggest some good calling cards for making calls from States to Canada....

Thanks

You can use calling cards... but why do you need unlocked phone for that? you can do it from any phone... It will cost roaming charges too, if you are using Rogers SIM card...

Freedom...he wants a cell phone at his disposal... doesnt want to search for a landline or payphone to make a phone call to Canada...

I think I should rephrase my question:

Unlocked GSM phone + Local (US) SIM Card + Calling card (for long distance)...

I searched online and found a US local SIM card... airtime rate is $0.10/m... no long distance for calls to Canada, so take 3rd variable out from above...
so in total it costs $0.10/m for calls to Canada....

Still, I think we can do better than $0.10/m...

Thanks

I think Sears Connect charges 2c/m for NA ... Please check Searsconnect.ca . Another option is CallSelect.ca - bot of these are post paid and can attach the LD service to phone numbers ....

Am I incorrect in saying that, if I go this route, I pay 2c/m to searsconnect or callselect + rogers airtime....

if yes, then it will work out to be more expensive than the option of unlocked phone...

if no, could you please explain a bit as to how it works...

(please note, I am talking about calls from cell phones not from landlines/payphones.... I know with landline/payphones I just need to pay for long distance charges which costs only 1cent/2cent....)
