Would u please put some light on Functional consultant role in SAP ?

what modules fits best as a SAP Functional Consultant?

Is it required to have more exp before to be a SAP Functional consultant..?

I am looking towards learn only what is going on, how it is done from the client's point of view, or how it is customized, but not how it is done through the use of programming languages (ABAP or Java).

I am sure that for many of you this question might sound very immature and kiddish..... sorry for that

There are two kinds of SAP consultants, Functional and Technical. There are some who would fall under a third category, Techno-Functional. But to define the basic working, we will stick to the two main categories.

Functional consultants work with specific modules and the 'main' function is customizing. So there are functional consultants for every module; MM, BW, FICO, HR etc.

Technical consultants are the once doing more of a technical stuff; support, programming etc. SAP Basis Administrators, ABAP programmers and SAP Security consultants fall under this category.

From your earlier posts, I gather that you have doing technical support so far. If you intend to take the plunge, might wanna start with SAP security as Kabutar 12 said, it's the easiest to learn. And then you might wanna add Basis Admin skills to you profile. Even though as per SOX, there has to be segregation of duties, there are a lot of companies out there who would ask for Basis and Security knowledge in one consultant, my current company being one.

Do not worry about the pay rate when you start, my first SAP job was for 40/hr. It definitely goes up as you gather experience and tune your profile, learning curve matters too.

Been there done that...let me tell you this, SAP is not an easy field. You have to update yourself regularly. I've spent a few years working in this technology and still have to go back to the books on a regular basis. Others working in SAP would vouch for that. And when you do take the plunge, be ready for a lot of rejections, a lot of lying on the resume. I've never seen any entry level jobs in SAP, so a new person has to fudge the resume in order for the client to even look at it. And when you fudge the resume, you better have the knowledge to back it up or you end up falling flat on your face when they start grilling you during that interview.

With the current scenario, it's even tougher for someone new to enter this field. I personally know a lot of qualified consultants warming up their backsides since last few months.

Thank you again Iknownothing & Kabutar12

based on the information i gather from this post i should go with SAP security and BASIS first .

Although i don't like programming , i do hv little knowledge on programming, basic knowledge on VB and html. but i don't prefer going into development site of SAP - its to much for me.

i also have some database ( oracle dba) knowledge and i can deal with SQL

sorry about asking this again and again but i have opportunity to take course threw EI benefits and i wanna take this opportunity by thinking long way.

i dont wanna make mistake choosing wrong module so i dont have to regret in future.

although it will be funded by government and i m not paying anything,,, i still have to spend my time , and this is the only time where i have chance to take right directions.

I am not to sure but i guess SAP BASIS and SAP Security is relatively small portion of SAP and has small training, but with EI i can go for longer courses upto 6-8 months. so why not take a advantage of going for bigger modules.

again, i might be wrong on thinking so please correct me if i m making u upset saying basis and security is relatively small :(

Blue_peafowl,
I am in the same situation like you and have almost the same experience as you. Though an Architect and waiting for an EI, I have my 8 month studied PG Diploma in comp. Applications (With a Oracle-VB project) as well as Oracle, ASP, VB, HTML, C, C++ Training.
Having researched and got useful inputs from Ani and Kabatur12, I am seeing that only SAP HR might be the only useful module for me and I am going ahead training with the below mentioned institute
http://www.erptek.com/ (No financial gains for me)

They are located in Mississauga and HRDC approved meaning that I can get EI funding for the same (If I am approved for EI). I will be atteneding their information seminar next week and as well as mailing my resume to them so that they will recommend a module based on my resume and which I will check with our CD SAP guru's ( Ani and Kabatur12).

Peace by TK

Hi TK, how are you doing.

I am glad you are looking at SAP HR as a possible module.
Its not that difficult to learn and has good demand in North America.
Talk to the institute and see if they will also cover Canadian Payroll in the course as most of the projects has this prerequisite.

Now as you have mentioned your programming experience (8 month course), you have below options in HR module.

1. Functional HR: Responsible for configuring system, dealing with business, writing functional specs etc. Below are sub-modules in HR and its nice to know at least 3.

i) Personal Management: Consist of personal development, benefits, recruitment, administration, compensation management, personal cost planning, pension scheme, budget management. ( Important)

ii) Time Management: Shift planning, time sheets (CATS), transfer, incentive wages, work schedule etc. (Important)

iii) Payroll : Should cover Canada and if possible USA (Very Important)

iv) Training and Event management: (Not that important, only few companies uses it)

v) Org management: (Very Important)

2. HR Abap resource: In this role you will be working in technical pieces of HR module and will be responsible for creating and maintaining programs.
Below are the few top skills you need to have:

i) Abap knowledge with logical databases.
ii) Creating or modifying infotypes
iii) Creating HR reports / interfaces.
iv) working with database clusters and macros.

TK, but do talk to training institutes and find out what all they are covering and whats the industry experience of the trainer.
I will try to email some HR specific documentation to you.
