Though I am a CA and a CPA, I confess I have never spent time to research anything - specially anything related to education and career. And that shortcoming of mine brings me to this forum. I need advice from university students, Canadian University passouts and parents.
I have a few questions as under:
1. My son is presently in grade 11 and wishes to pursue the career of Corporate Lawyer. He intends to do BBA in undergrad followed by Law. I personally do not know about education system in Canada and I need advice from members
a) how can he go about pursuing his studies to become a Corporate lawyer.
b) to become a corporate lawyer, which is better - a combination of undergrad in management and law, or a professional accounting qualification, say CA and law?
c) what are good universities for pursuing the above? - if cost is a deciding factor, and if it is not.
d) he is a very bright student (was in gifted class and came out with flying colours) - what are the possibilities of his getting any scholarships for different courses.
2. What is the basic system of post high school education in Canada. What is the difference in a college and university? (Back home in India, in my time atleast, each college was affiliated to a university - except may be IITs and IIMs - it seems it is a different system here.)
Well the above questions could also be answered by my son - but then my analysis and advice to him will be based totally on what he explains to me, and therefore I need advice/education from fellow members.

Advice is free – lessons I charge for!!
It is a pity that I have been trying my best to help people know more about Canada and life here thru CD, but when I need some advice, there is not a single reply! (though about 40 views of this thread).
In case no one wants to answer my query, I would say it might be good for me to get off this site. However, if it is because no one is knowledgeable to be able to answer this query, then it is a matter of grave concern, since I wonder what each of us is doing here if we cannot think of our children's future though most of us say we came here for them!

Hi,
Being a student myself at a uni here, I can answer and give you some places to look for the info. I'm not into Law so I haven't specifically looked into the details of this degree but I am giving info to the best of my knowledge.
For Law, one first has to complete an undergraduate degree (Bachelor's). This can be in any field (though a related field like accounting, economics makes more sense). Once the student has graduated with a bachelor's degree, they cna then apply to law school. Univ of Toronto has a good law school.
Difference between colleges and universities. Here colleges like Seneca, George Brown City College etc are more of a diploma/technical kind of places where you go to learn a certain skills. To get a Bachelor's degree, one has to go to a university like York U, Ryerson, UofT (all in Toronto).
This link actually will give you detailed info on the application process and requirements (these will generally hold true at other unis also)

cheers
Also, please don't hesitate should you have any more question or need info. I will try my best to atleast point you to the right source though I may be busy during the week with courses and might not get to reply till the weekend.
