If you are still working, then please don't leave your job and move to Alberta/Canada without any concrete plan. Please check the facts about fast track immigration process (instead of hearing from consultants/others) to Alberta (this http://www.albertacanada.com/immigration/ may give you some info).

Since you are not PR, then on what basis/visa you will work in Alberta. If you are a PR, you can surely get $10-15/hr job, but why you want to do such job, when you are already working as an engineer in US.

Why you want to do MBA from Calgary/Edmonton or Canada? Why not US or India (if you are an Indian)? You need to answer these questions to yourself and plan accordingly.

If you really want to do MBA then do your research and work for getting the admission to your preferred university. If you want to search for jobs in EE, then look for the jobs in your field.

Again, please don't plan for $10-12/hr job, as you are worth much more than that and you will get frustrated in a month doing such jobs.

Alberta's economy was booming due to oil price in the past and you will soon see $40/barrel.

You may want to consider applying for Canadian PR right now.

I was looking at the prospect of moving to Alberta. I have my masters in EE from a university in the US and have been working for a semiconductor company for the past 4 years in the US on a H1 B visa. I heard that Alberta is fast tracking the immigration process for people with H1B Visas

Before statrting the process I just had a few questions

1. Is it tough to find engineering positions in Alberta (Edmonton or Calgary)

2. Is US experience recogonized in Canada

3. How about finding 12 to 15 dollar per hour jobs incase I am not able to find a full time position

4.What's the cost of living in Edmonton/ Calgary (like rent, insurance etc etc..)

Your replies are highly appreciated!!!!

Hi Ash20.

Thanks for your posting. Here are the replies for your questions

1. Since you are not PR, then on what basis/visa you will work in Alberta. - I am planning on applying for my PR through the AINP program

If you are a PR, you can surely get $10-15/hr job, but why you want to do such job, when you are already working as an engineer in US - I have already exhausted 4 years of my H1B visa and I don't think that i will get my GC in the next 2 years unless the immigration process is changed drastically especially for people from India and China

Why you want to do MBA from Calgary/Edmonton or Canada? Why not US or India (if you are an Indian)? If I have to do my MBA in the US then I will have to pay out of state tuition which could cost me anywhere from 30000USD to 50000USD depending on the university, but with a PR status in Canada I just have to pay instate

If you really want to do MBA then do your research and work for getting the admission to your preferred university. If you want to search for jobs in EE, then look for the jobs in your field. - I am definitely going to look for jobs in my field, part-time jobs is a backup

With the current situation in the US and with almost 10 million people in the US unemployed I have to look at other options. Trust me companies are laying off thousands of people everyday!!!!!!

I don't know anything about AINP program, so if you can get PR really fast, then yes, go ahead.

If you are still in job or don't expect layoff then you can apply for PR from US and I heard you can get it in around 2 years (but I am out of touch with current timeframe of PR, so check the facts).

I don't know the fees for MBA in Alberta, but one of my friend has completed MBA earlier this year from one of the top business school of Canada and he had paid tution of $45K (as a PR). Yes tution should be cheaper in Canada. You may also want to look at the tution fees of UBC or SFU (it shoud be around 35K) or other top institutes.

You can also come on student visa if fees differential for PR and non-PR is not much. Don't want to scare you, but it is not easy to get job after MBA in Canada too.

I fully trust you about situation in US.

Well they say under the AINP program one can get a PR in 8 to 9 months.

My plan is probably to move to Calgary or Edmonton if I get approved. I am mentally prepared to give my self 1 year to 1.5 years to settle down and look for something substantial. In interim I would hope I could get some kind of part-time job to keep me going. I guess my main expense would be rent. I already have a car in the US and plan to drive from the US to Canada. I guess getting a Canadian licence shouldn't be a problem as I already hold a US drivers licence. I will decide what universities to apply after I move.

I once again appreciate everyones posting

Couls someone define what a labour job is . I keep coming across this term a lot in this forum. According to me if you are not the owner you are a labour irrespective of whether you are an engineer or a cashier

Labour job are jobs which require repetative manual labour work. You donot need an education nor the knowledge of English to do it.
Example are :
1. Working in an assembly line for filling shampoos. You will feed bottles into the assembly line, fix the lid once the shamppo is done and package the finished shampoo in to a box of say 24 or 36 nos., tape it and leave it for the fork lift to take it away. You will be doing this for 8 hours in total at break neck speed and have 2 nos of 15 min. breaks and one 1/2 hour break in between
2. Working in a warehouse to lift 20 lbs to 30 lbs boxes manually and arrange it into a truck in brick formation.
3. Catch the books coming our of a printing press and make piles of 20 each and then arrange in a skit and shrink wrap it.
4. Pack masalas, nuts, sweets in a plastic package

etc...

Etc.......

At times even these jobs are tough to get unless you network. The harder the jobs, more easier to get.

Hope this helps

Peace by TK
