DT i too am not very fond of people who always deride a place just for the sake of disassociation. However, there is some truth when you talk about the poverty there. Why should a child(or anyone) go without food when India is one of the largest wheat producers in the world? If we ignore that fact , our leaders will only be happy to follow suit.
So CNN and BBC may be doing service to those that do not have a voice after all. I would rather have the issue in the spotlight rather than hidden away and not dealt with. Even if it means personal discomfort in the short run. India is achieving great strides but the truth is that the poverty in India and places like Canada are very different. If we do not face up to this problem we will not be able to tackle it and our leaders will lose whatever will they have to tackle it too.

It is these Phirangee Waanabe Desis that promote the CNN and BBC version of "Poverty & Famine Stricken India" in the western world.

I agree! The Truth should be told so that the world sees the complete picture. Unfortunately, CNN and BBC have a penache for showing only the darker side of the coin. If they showed the "India Shining" part along with their regular "India - Land of the Poor" series, it would provide a balanced diet of information to the world. There are Poor and Homeless in US and Canada too but all you see on TV is the Steel and Glitter. The "Passiveness" of us Desis regarding such issues is to a large extent, part of the problem. Can you imagine CNN running a "Poor and Homelss of America" program worldwide for even a week? Dubya will surely declare WW3 on CNN as a "threat to America"

DT,
I am afraid I do not agree that CNN and BBC always tries to show only negative images of India. Like I said poverty has a different face in India when compared to Canada. However, I have never felt that they are very biased in their potrayal of India. Lately, I read only about the changing face of India on the websites of both these broadcasters(no time for TV). Their writings often seem to be unanimous with that of the times of India.
On the other hand I think I would be ashamed if they really did show some things that happens in cities like Bombay(considered the financial capital). Have you ever seen the Sion-trombay road(eastern express highway) in the wee hrs of the morning? Or the sides of the railway tracks? People squat there every morning for ....you guess the rest(I am ashamed to write about it and I dont want to be responsible for such a negative account even if its the sad truth). THAT would be bad if shown on CNN or BBC. India Shining? I cannot buy into that fully yet. Giant strides..yes...and we read about it but a long way to go.

Thank you for the replies and the feelings expressed for our dear Motherland.
Garvo, I did not mean that al the villages are dirty or backward.....all I want to convey is that it is the apathy that is prevailing and which becomes a great hinderance in the direction of progress......I agree with you. The vilages are beautiful!! And the Modern Village is a fact and yes everyone wants to give and get the best......I think even the women folk are becoming self reliant and for that HATS OFF !! Are there not villages where a politician has visited for votes with a basketfull of promises and a magic wand to take away all their woes?? Is it not the same village whose people on electing that same man never saw his face for the next five years?? Do these people at that point of time appreciate the beauty of that village?? No. It is we, the visitors of a few days who never get the real picture.......Even I have been to beautiful villages in Gujarat, in Bengal, in Maharashtra and yes it is soooo peaceful..and definately the picture is not so bleak,I agree DT......and yes India will mature but I pray that the Indian Dream is nowhere like the American Dream (seems doutful) as what we have in the form of culture and heritage will be lost in the shine of materialism.......America did not have it so it lost nothing but when we will loose, it would be a treasure lost and I don't think anyone of us want our future generations to be so bankrupt
It was on CNN that I saw a report of a village in India where the fluoride content in the water was so much above normal consumption level that people there had got used to deformed limbs and poor eyesight and black teeth....what do they do?? They are so poor and ignorent. I liked what CNN had done then...but yes when my friend's son from Florida came visiting Bombay and asked me "where are the bullockcarts?" I got mad.....not at him, but at the portrayal of India as a country where people bathe near the railway tracks and where cars have to honk perpetually to get the cow sitting on the road to move.
Jake your post touched the core of the problem....you are not alone.I think even I have done the same so as not to be mobbed.or with a thought that "come on ..with that money I am just giving encouragement to the boss who runs the begging gang!!" a form of running away from the problem, yet there is hope no doubt ,for as the people from the grass roots empower themselves with education as "VIDYA PARAM BALAM"so will a day come when no politician will be able to play around for his own gain and after all we have the great moral support of our CULTURE, OUR SANSKARS and they will help find a new way and a new dawn to a SHINING INDIA.
HUM ZAROOR HONGE KAMAYAB!!
