I can tell $45K won't cut it. But come on, $120K? I am not sure many here can expect to get paid that much...let alone newbies.

You should change you ID to "winner"

Can you quote some statistics / link or is it a wild guess ??

Golf is played by virtually everyone in Canada/USA , be it a walmart employee or the top executive of a Multi national. The difference is ,who plays where. You can play golf for 18 $ a game, some cources will cost 180 $ a game while others 1800 $ a game.

There are atleast 50 golf cources in the Toronto region. So i would consider golf as essential expence just like playing galli cricket in india . I personally know people in the 60,000 $ to 90,000 $ income range who cut lot of corners.

They don't golf, don't go to restaurants, don't travel much , don't buy nice clothes for special occasions. Some of these people are educated professionals who could be in th $ 120 k range but have not yet managed to get the right job yet.

It also reflects in the type and year of car they drive. So i would say that you would mange to live survie and growup for less then 120 k $ per annum but then what is the point in migrating to canada if you cannot make this much money.

I know desi big Truck drivers make this kid of money and live the Canadian dream , but driving big truck for days living on the road is not everyones cup of tea specially if someone has gone thru the trouble of getting an education.

It is a decent starting salary ..... i started with that and we were a family of 3. I lived in a decent 2 bedroom apartment and also had a car. It is just about enough for a start.

It also depends which city you are going to be living in and where you are going to be working.

Loser - Does choice and preference mean much to you? Or let me put it in simpler terms...likes and dislikes maybe? Does that make any sense to you? I hate golf. That wouldn't be cutting corners would it? Sheesh. I think you are getting me all riled up on purpose or you are just a really really...anyways, you get my point :)

You judge people by the car the drive and whether they golf or not???? Say it ain't so...please?

Moderator - This is my last post I promise. As we seem to be dealing with something else here :)

Interesting topic!

A decent salary depends on many factors.

Household income of $120,000 (before taxes for a family of four; incld. two school going kids) may not be a decent salary for someone owing $300K mortgage, two cars and living in a 3000 sq ft home. Other cost of living expenses are almost similar for many folks in general.

On the other hand, someone with a home mortgage of say, $150,000, $120-140K pre-tax household income can easily buy a *comfortable lifestyle incld. a nice summer vacation in Canada and a trip to India every other year.

There are other variables too that can help answer "a decent salary question" depending upon individual circumstances.

* definition varies from person to person

Let us do the break down and see : (all comfortable minimums only)-per month

Rent : $1100
Groceries : $800
Car (buying) : $7000 (say $200 monthly)
Gas : $150
Maintenance of Car ($50)
Insurance $200
Phone (land and cell) : $100
Internet (high speed) $50
Cloths : $ 100
Miscellaneous / eating out : $ 100
Fund to go to India every 2 years for 4 people ($8000) $ 330 a month
Children spending $200 a month (for both). (if big spending money, if small diaper , cream etc...) Lady of the house not to work and care for the children, if they are small

So it comes to atleast $ 3380 a month or $41K a year. To get 41K a year, your annual salary should be $55 K a year

See where you want to add or cut corners. (Bus pass for a month is $100 per person or around $2.50 a ticket). Buffets are $12 a person. Again, you should be working in a good company to get extended medical benefits or you will pay a fortune on medical expenses (unless you are on Welfare). Besides Dental service (for adullts) is not free. You also should know that it will be very hard for you to find a family doctor in Ontario. If you go to the hospital emergency, then it may take atleast 6-12 hours before the doctor sees you and you will be waiting in the line like a begger for the doctor to finally see you.

Hope this helps.

Peace
