Ajantha Mendis has made a sensational international debut capturing more than 50 international wickets within a fortnight. It is no mean achievement considering the fact that Saurav, Rahul, Sachin and Laxman having more than 30,000 plus test runs between them have been left clueless in reading Mendis. Unlike our spin quartets of the 70s, he is able to bowl both off and leg spin with equal ease. He mixes up both with his armers, flippers and googlies which make him totally unplayable. When Indians themselves find him very difficult, he is going to be unplayable for teams like England or South Africa. Again unlike our sports heroes, he may not be showered with money or other goodies. He may have to thank his stars for bullets not whizzing past his ears, for he has been loaned by the Sri Lankan army who are fighting a civil war. It is worth pondering how Sri Lanka is able to put up such a world class team, with most of their youth having to go to war, while India with hundreds of first class circketers to choose from gets easily defeated by them,

I don't disagree with you, but personally I feel that its too early for Ajantha Mendis to be consider & compare with other great bowlers of the world including India. He still needs to play 100 matches & prove his consistency.

As long as I know AJIT AGARKAR holds the world record of achieving fastest 50 & fastest 200 wickets in ODI. He was not consistent & right now is been forgot by people including you & me. He is even not considered to be chosen in Indian squad.

Also IRFAN PATHAN was a spectacular bowling sensational when he came to international cricket. He was even awarded with ICC Emerging Player of the Year in 2004. But right now he is struggling hard to even maintain his position in the team.

Still honestly I wish all the best to INDIAN TEAM for facing Ajantha Mendis... !!!

Thanks for your reply. It is normal to find Indian batsmen struggle against Mcgrath or Bret Lee, but was surprising to see them play a spinner like Mendis as if their one hand was tied behind. Again Mendis had taken these 50 wickets in about a fortnight's time both in tests and one dayers together. It is definitely too early, but cricket was getting heavily loaded against the bowlers, by doctoring the pitches to be flat and with usage of heavy bats. Even a mishit fetches a 4 or 6. The slow bowlers were afraid to bowl in ODIs or 20/20. Under these circumstances if Mendis can perform it is definitely something great.
