CD's,
Just a premable to my topic.
We all know that the economy in the USA is tumbling and thus the economy of Ontario is slowing down. 680 news says that we are likely to join the equalization program from the central govt. in 2010. We also know that manufacturing is taking a hit in Ontario. Recent increases in the GAs price (117 cents and still rising) is bound to affect people from all walk of life soon and further slow down the ontario economy.
I want to find out if CD's are concerned about this slowdown . Are your offices showing any symptoms of slowdown and are they ready to fire people? What would be our furture steps in case we are all laid off in the future. Does any CD think of this slowdown (esp. in Onatario) to be very significant.
To give my side of the story, Our office projects (buildings) have come down drastically. The principal is making proposals after proposals to the client but we still have not come up with signed projects. Our office has freezed hiring and we may be laying off people soon. Naturally the first person to be fired will be the person who is not working properly. Also our increments have been stopped and everyone in our office is without any salary increase for 2 years now.

Cd's views will be appriciated in this regard.

My company has a freeze on all new hiring. Part timers who were getting full time hours before now have only guaranteed part time hours. OT is now unheard of. Bonus - Let us see what happens to that in June. The word is that too shall be cut.

Gas at a record high, Diesel too at a record - all food, veggies and fruits shall go up. Filling up the gas tank shall soon become a capital expenditure.

The bright side is today the markets were up and many stocks are at 52 week high and a few much much beyond any body's wildest imagination.

Situation is same in our company as far as new hiring and increment is concerned. We were told by senior executive that there will be no increment and no increase in head counts in near future. By the way our industry is telecommunication.

i know a lot of other people are reporting similar freezes ( Official & unofficial )

it is good to live within means in these times

( not take big risks)

at my workplace:

hiring freeze,
rumours of layoffs,
no one is really busy,
all contract and part-timers laid off last December.

Greetings All
I dont know about the stock markets but I think the hiring in companies is sector dependent, my organization (IT / Management Consultancy) is recruiting as always and we have also initiated our annual campus recruitment efforts.

Thanks
