In 2006 we went to India and stayed there for 6 months after being abroad for 9 years - those 6 months are the best 6 months in the past 10 years I ve had - your own country , your own people , dirt cheap facilities and things - food , drinks whatever - had a real blast .

India , much like any other place has its pros & conses . Its true that staying in N America , our coming generations would be 'converted ' in terms of culture and habits. Like someone said in this forum that its important to give good life to children but its more imp to give good values .

In today s India , middle class has risen dramatically - largely due to outsourcing and export of skills - and this is to remain much like China's . So good times are in store for India and thats a very good thing .

If there are lack of facilities there are alternatives for the neo rich viz mineral water , power back up , chauffered cars ---- plus you get your own culture & environment .

On the other side , the system is deplorable and due to uncontrolled population growth the strain wouuld continue . Law , order and infrastructure could never match that of Canada's . Plus the moral values here are much higher --- you live amongst humans of better ethics and principles here. Plus natural resources & infrastructure are in abundance here .

You will find people in India who would not want to come to Canada / US . You will find desis in India who would nt want to return to India -- both of them happy . Ultimately its your priorities which will decide your choice .

Hello! may be you may like to read these 20+ pages....

Return to India: One Family's Journey to America and Back
Published: November 01, 2007 in India

For decades, it was widely assumed that the brightest Indians would go overseas to study and eventually settle there. Today, signs have begun to appear that the tide may be turning. The fact that global companies are setting up operations in India makes it easier for non-resident Indians to return home, often while remaining with the same employer. Indian students are not leaving the country as eagerly as they once did, and if they do, they go back home much faster because of the attractive professional opportunities there. Others return because they feel they are losing a connection with their past. In this special section, India offers one family's experience as a microcosm of the larger trend -- Bangalore-based writer Shoba Narayan's account of her family's decision to return to India, after living in the U.S. for 20 years.

Hi Kisi143.. where do I sign up? Can you send me the link please??

Like many said, returning to India or not is totally upto one. All depends one much one can adapt and more importantly tolerate. Based on what kind of profession one is, the actual money value differ, but some observations I made - mostly from my own and few other friend's experiences...

- For a middle class salary, one can affort a maid, cook, driver etc. in India, where as here you can't.

- In India, many offers and promises are made verbally and once hooked, they backtrack just like that - true especially in case of credit cards, loans etc. You end up paying or you get harassing calls from their agents.

- If there is a dispute, one will need to use one's contacts to resolve it. There is no real legal recourse unless you are willing to spend hours and hours after it - not worth for smaller, day to day issues.

- To get a draft (DD) in India, in a city, you need to put in request in the morning and collect the draft in the evening! No 5 minute service, unless you are willing to push your way through.

- No parking available at the bank or any such places - in cities.

- If you work in a city/state speaking a different language, every government transaction is a nightmare and needs middlemen.

- Changing the electricity connection in your name is a 2 day effort using middlemen

- Getting property papers in your name - Katha, Patta, Patti etc. what ever name they are called; not just registration - is a never ending saaga.

- a 10 km drive will take 1 hour - in cities

- Got a 30 min+ queue for pretty much everything.

- options for travelling at short notice, especially during weekends probably will need own vehicle or Taxi as no seats will be available in bus or train. Flight connections are limited - though improving of late.

- Especially in IT, work day will start at 8 AM (leaving house for work), reach office past 9, returning past 7 and reaching home by 8:30/9. Since all shops will get closed around 9, forget shopping during weekdays.

- Weekend shopping is another challenge - as most aisles will have just enough place for one cart and there will be ten people trying to push carts in opposite ways!

- There could be a bandh or hartal for pretty much everything - even when actors die of natural causes.

- If it rains heavily, the water is going to flood your apartment parking area and one will be lucky not to have your car fully immersed.

- Getting a school admission for the kid is a real challenge. Donation for kindergarten in any good school costs 50K and above. Fees will be another 30K+ per year. If you have to move due to job etc. and get another admission, that is another round of donation + some recommendation to get a seat.

I can go on... But for many (including me), these daily irritants adds up to keep them on this side of the world. After around 7 years here, we returned to India - for good - stayed for around 1.5 years and finally decided to come back! I still hold my Indian passport and hope I can return some point soon - It's more like idhar mera dimag, udhar mera man kid of case. Things are much different in smaller towns, but then getting the right job in a town is next to impossible. I miss my family, relatives and the friends and places I grew up with... but....

The only reason I would even think about returning back is for parents and family. I was in a similar situation as Viggy and have dealt with a lot of these frustrations firsthand. Again, I feel I was trying to compare the things in India with the US/Canada and that's where I feel I was wrong.

I guess the trick would be to adapt yourself and acknowledge at every juncture that India is different and things work differently there. Once that realization dawns upon you, most of the work is done. Again, it's easier said than done :)

C'mon guys. This topic was discussed number of times. Why bring it again and agian?
How come no one is talking abt those who have returned and living happily? Just becuase one guy returned to Canada does not mean that no one has gone back. There are number of them who have returned from USA to India. Since we are talking only abt Canada on CD, looks like we shun any topic from USA.
Two of my friends working in Accenture in Bangalore returned and are having a great time.
It's a individual decision. If someone does not want to go back, that's their choice. Let them sit back and read the posters. No need to badmouth or comment on others who have returned.
