I want to get my mother here for couple of months and I live near North York Civic Center, GTA. However I work and would be away from home daily for about 10 hours and I don’t want my mother to be left alone. I do not know of Indians who love in my apartment building.

I was hoping if there are some activities for seniors available in my neighborhood so that she could remain busy when I am gone to work. Does anyone have some suggestions on how can seniors use their time? She is not very thorough with English so I am thinking of signing her up for ESL sort of classes.

Any kind of suggestions are welcome.

Thanks,

Peace

I feel so happy for any CD whose parents visit them here. i just had mine visit me on my daughter's birth.
I have a few suggestions for you peace
Library:- Most libraries carry books/VCDs in our regional languages as well. Also in most libraries there are playgroups where usually grandparents bring their kids and your mom can meet many of her agemates who may be coming from same community.
Temples: whatever form of religion you have, if you visit your temple/gurudwara etc you have good opportunity to meet likeminded people.
English classes are a good idea and also you may look into getting her enrolled in some other classes of her interest like painting/ pottery for which you can have all info from your nearest community centre.
Enjoys Mom's visit ...its a pleasure.

i think that the class is a great idea for her to spend the time. if she has any hobbies that she practices at home in india try to make them available e.g. if she is in the habbit of reading newspapers, listening to radio, specific tv chanels, embroidery..

Thanks HelloG and Michelle for your suggestions.

Mandir/Gurudwara idea is great as my mother is a social person. I will try to find out one near by my place.

There is a hindu mandir right on the interection of Yonge and Hwy7 (on yonge street). The nearest Gurudwara for you is one at Middlefield and Steeles in Scarborough. Check your library, your parents might find enough company there. My Dad stayed with us for over 5 months and never felt bored. He used to read alot on the internet (he learnt to use computer after coming here) and then go to the library every evening from 4-7 pm. There he made a lot of friends and they formed a group of thier own. Luckily we also have a lot of Indians in our apartment so he had some company at home too.

All the best.
Hiren
