And please - economy of India is not surging because of Indians abroad - it is surging because Globalization has enabled India and China open markets and due to their less cost of living / currency and skills they get the production and services . Indians abroad invest in India coz of greater rates of return and Indian Govt well understands this - hence has different investing categories for Indians and NRIs.

Its not "because" of Indians abroad, but the Indians abroad have and ARE big contributing factor. Sure, none of this would happen if Indians in India aren't working hard to demonstrate their value and the bulk of credit should go to them. But you have to live in a fool's paradise to think that India or China just got lucky and that globalization just happened to miss a LOT of other potential candidates and landed in those places.

You can continue with your "views" that Indians abroad have nothing to do with the economic progress of India. I'll go with facts.

The link I posted for Investpro may help your "views" though.

I think Fido's post is absolutely right. China and india are rising very fast because of globalization and also because they abandoned the usual petty politics of war with neighbours and have started to see beyond their nose. They also have immensely changed, an example of India and china shaking hands while opening tradional borders, something that would have out of question just 15 years ago.
While the so called Indian abroad have jumped on to the bandwagon not because all of a sudden they have been hit by a patriotism or some long lost sentimental value but simply because as Dosanjh pointed it to Indians during his visit in 2004 : The capital will fly where it will grow.

Sometimes I am really amused to see how people out of India trip on each others' heels to prove their "indian-ness" yet they forget that indians wisely consider NRIs to be non returning indians.

and by the way...
If Sunita is Indian just because she has some lineage in her and has visited het ancesstoral village, how come Sonia Gandhi is still not Indian enough to be PM, even after having spent several decades there?

Let's talk about India for a second. Should I read your comments above to mean Indians abroad have played no role in India's recent economic growth?

Thanks the links,

I already knew that 4-5% of GDP revenue is due to BPO and related stuff, but whether 5% translates to it being a driver of Indian economy is the question. I have written several articles saying that it isn't, but every little bit helps. The main driver is internal consumption. Each one has their own perception.

I won't bore you with links to my articles. Too many of them.

The other link is good too. I can say I had my hand in convincing US universities that theory in IIT in India was at par with Ivy League material way back when.
Thanks again

At least 98% of Indians working abroad are working for overseas companies and investing their worth in those companies and countries - have you made any headway to benefit Indian economy and opening some back office avenue ?? If yes then you come in that 2% - if n then you belong in the 98%

The people due to whom India is rising are like Narayanswamy , Azim Premji , Ratan Tata , Ambanis and the ilk - not to mention the milliions who stay back are happy in their country and contribute to its success unlike ppl like Sunita Williams or her dad who have got nothing to do with the country or its success. Irony is that some Indians are going bonkers over it .

Globalization was not because of Indians abroad - recall the WTO in 90 s - the strategy of opening 3r world markets for 1st world products fell back on them as , 3rd world countries gained a ready market for their products and services .
