Fido - There's "views" and there's facts. You decide what carries more weight.

Facts will tell you that the services outsourcing industry which is a major driver of India's economy right now was NOT a result of Americans / Europeans throwing darts on a world map.

If you break this down objectively, the issue is pretty straight forward factually (ignoring DIO’s slightly flammable and wholly stereotypical comments on gujaratis)

Positives of Indians honoring Sunita Williams and treating her like a star

1) She came to India and although she’s not 100% Indian by blood, her Indian heritage and the resulting association does help the perception of Indians abroad.
2) Young girls in India who couldn’t care less about her non-Indian Mom and husband will view her as a role model. To them she’ll be Sunita, a female astronaut who’s achieved so much at a young age. Someone to look up to and someone who’s inspire them to be achievers. I’m sure you’ll agree that all forms of
3) It may encourage others achievers of Indian heritage who were born outside to do more to associate with India and Indians, giving us more role models. Its something the country needs more of desperately.

Negatives

1) Some people will get pissed off and question her authenticity. They’ll look at this as an infliction upon their pride.

For me, its an easy pick based on the above.

Can you give me a source where it says that the services outsourcing industry is a major driver of India's economy. I would appreciate it. Could use it when I guest lecture.I know it's a major driver of foreign revenue, but is it of the economy as a whole.

I am sure that Americans/Europeans did not throw darts to choose which country to outsource to. What exactly is the history behind it? Your profile says you're an IT pro, perhaps you can enlighten us.

Please note I am asking these questions bonafide like to use in my presentations.
Much obliged for any pointers.

Sorry dude, you'll have to do the legwork yourself on finding the sources for your presentations. A one minute search on google yielded ....

First of all, the IT PRO profile has nothing to do with knowlege about the history of outsourcing. For instance, you could be a SQL Server programmer, know nothing about outsourcing and still be a very capable IT PRO. Just wanted to clarify for the sake of your presentation.

A link about your question though, again thanks to google. I'm sure there's tons more where that came from and I know you have the time :) (We'll keep the source of that confidential. I insist! :D )

BL ,

Every fact may have >1 view ~ the glass may have 50% water but someone views it as half filled and the other as half empty .

Time : Pre Independence : Fact - Britan ruling India - Views : One category of people accepted dominance and licked the shoes of the British and the other fought against it losing lives .

Fact ~ Sunita Williams is an American born to an Indian father & Slovenian mother and married has an American husband .

View : Her father shunned his country & diluted his culture and 'Indian' heritage by marrying a Slovenian - I doubt if the family would have celebrated Holi / Diwali and the like. Then she married an American and save for her origin she is a born and bred American.

Surprising she did not visit India for 9 years and others claim her links to India.

I respect her for her calibre , performance and capabilities , but do not find any weight in Indians celebrating her because she had some Indian ancestors as that heritage stands transitioned .

Brain Drain - the same brains which could have been used to make up India have left it for greener pastures - if someone is to view her as a role model - she should also view leaving India , settling in the US , working for the US and marrying an American - No benefits to India in that v/s role models like Rakesh Sharma , Naresh Trehan ,Ratan Tata , Ambanis and the ilk . Otherwise , as a female who has accomplished so highly she is a role model to ALL females in the world.

And please - economy of India is not surging because of Indians abroad - it is surging because Globalization has enabled India and China open markets and due to their less cost of living / currency and skills they get the production and services . Indians abroad invest in India coz of greater rates of return and Indian Govt well understands this - hence has different investing categories for Indians and NRIs.

Its not "because" of Indians abroad, but the Indians abroad were and ARE a big contributing factor. Sure, none of this would happen if Indians in India aren't working hard to demonstrate their value and the bulk of credit should go to them. But you have to live in a fool's paradise to think that India or China just got lucky and that globalization just happened to miss a LOT of other potential candidates and landed in those places.

You can continue with your "views" that Indians abroad have nothing to do with the economic progress of India. I'll go with facts.

The link I posted for Investpro may help your "views" though.
