Dear Friends
Settling in a new country is very struggling and difficult task,It needs lots of courage and determination.I have been here from last 3 months in Canada and would share my experience so that all the newcomers may gain something from my experience.
For Engineers, accounts persons, administrative assistants etc. main problem in getting job in Canada is \\\"Canadian Experience\\\" I am not going into the discussion about whether it is right or wrong. It is a requirement and one normally needs it.
I have joined Duffrin Peel Adult Learning Center within first month of my arrival at Canada. They have 8 weeks classroom training where they teach self assessment, resume writing, cover letter writing, interview skills (they arrange for Mock Interview to tell your weakness),telephone calling, researching companies, etc.
Then they ask you to research for 10 companies where you would like to be placed and contact them on your behalf and arrange for interview. If you get through you will undergo Co-op (Voluntary) placement for 11 weeks. This way you get an entry to an organisation and if you do well you may (or may not) be absorbed in the organisation.Otherwise you get the experience letter or refernce which you can put on your resume and may help in further job search.
This is government funded and charges are $30.There are people who are joining it after 3 years of stay in Canada.I have got the co-op placement in Maple leaf and Pepsi though this.
I will suggest that newcomer should come alone and do it for 5 months (8 +11 = 19 weeks),one can take some labour job evening shift or night shift to sustain expenses and after 5 months one will be better prepared for Canadian Market and industries.
If any one has any comments, further querries about this programme,I will be happy to share.
Good luck

hi to all my engineer friends here in CYA-NADA?
sorry its CANADA.
so its my suggestion to all of my fellow engineers who has P ENG, CET, LET, AsT, and who are having a jog in their profession. In the success story my friend elaborate about Networking what he did and doing right now.. Can we be a part of it????
Canadian desi" has given a very nice oppurtunity to being in touch and share some experience.
we can be a part of networking and pull our new engineers who r struggling here in security agencies, cabs, and temp emp agencies.
in fact its my straight request to the ADMN of canadian desi that to open a new disscussion forum for Engineers from back home. you can do it sir..
and my request to all my fellow engineers who got the jobs here in their perspective fields......PLEASE DO NOT FORGET YOUR BROTHERS WHO ARE STILL STRUGGLEING...GIVE THEM A HAND OF SUPPORT...DONT GIVE JUST YOUR TEL NO. OR EMAIL ADDRESS. THEY NEED A REAL SUPPORT FORM YOU. YOU HAVE TO SHOW THEM A PATH OS SUCCESS.
Serach the directories you will find many of our brothers who are having very nice jobs. get them all together. I am sure we will get success here.
good luck
friends!!!!!!
I am writing this not to discourage anyone but I think it would be appropriate to share the experience, my 4 friends had with this “CO-OP” program. All four friends got “VOLENTEER” placement with good companies and once their term finished they were given only reference letter not the job ( by the way these reference letters do not carry much weight). Lately they came to know that some companies taking undue advantage of this generous government program. These companies do need workers but don’t want to pay them, so for them CO-OP is the easiest way to get workers for free.
During this placement period these CO-OP workers work very hard to make good impression in front of employer but… Where else these employer will get free hardworking and sincere workers? Some of these companies are running well with the help of such workers for an extended time and they are doing well.
In this country if you are willing to work as “volunteer” most of the companies would be willing to help you, at that time your non-Canadian education and work experience is very much acceptable but when it comes to paid employment, story is different, they won’t have work for you to begin with and your qualification & work experience would not be recognized by the same employer.
Thanks and regards.
