Need help with accomodation and living in Halifax / Darthmouth

Hi.. My name is Hitesh Patel, i am coming to Halifax on the 5th of August with my family (Wife & Daugther) from Ahmedabad on immigration visa. I am looking for a decent 2 bedroom appartment in good locality with access to local amenities. Is there any PG facility available in halifax...??. Kindly provide some insight on the matter.

Thanks.

Please browse other posts on the forum on this using the 'search in charcha' feature and keying in 'halifax' .

You have to decide an area per your preference and office . Please check the following links for accomodation search .Its prudent to stay temporarily for 2 - 4 weeks finalizing an accomodation in such time.

Down town is an ideal place to stay for a short period . I m not sure of any PG accomodations but I m sure the following will provide you available accomodation information.

Google for the following

Chronicle Herald / classifieds
kijiji halifax
craiglist halifax

Hi ,

I would readily share my email id with you . But still urge you to post your queries on the board (if they are not of personal nature) as it would be on the records and help people in future who wish to relocate to Nova Scotia.

For beginners , please take a map of Halifax from the net , have an idea about the city and then plan an initial stay of 1 month based on ads in the above sites and during this period finalize an accommodation . I am attaching a write up I must have found somewhere when I was relocating as follows -

Here is a general overview of the various areas of the city. It is pretty
hard to find one bedroom apartments that have washer and dryer included,
usually the apartment buildings have shared coin laundry facilities. You
may be better of looking at renting a house, duplex, or townhouse since
these will almost certainly have washer and dryer included.

Downtown Halifax: The area between South and Cogswell, east of Robie. There
are relatively few accomodations in this area, as it is mainly commercial
establishments and offices. Understandably, the few apartments that are
here are relatively expensive and also relatively small. Parking in the
area can also be problematic and expensive and many of the rents don't
include parking. Althought, it will be within walking distance of the
downtown core, it will also be fairly noisy due to the 24 hour activity.

North End: Penninsula area north of Cogswell and East of Robie. There are
some decent middle class areas in the North End and some low income areas,
housing projects, and drug-plaqued areas. The area gets considerably nicer
north of Young Street. However, if you are unfamiliar with the city I would
not recommend moving into the North End right away.

West End: Penninsula area west of Robie and north of Coburg. This is a
fairly attractive middle to upper-middle class area mostly consisting of
older homes and apartments. Most buildings will be 30+ years old. The area
will be relatively quiet, although it is more densely built than some of the
suburbs. Rents will be reasonable but still more expensive than Clayton
Park, etc. However, the area may be the perfect trade off being within 10
mins of downtown Halifax in most cases.

South End: Penninsula area south of Coburg and Spring Garden. This is the
most affluent area in Halifax city and rents will be signifigantly higher
than in the West and South ends. Also be aware of extremely low rents in
the area, since due to its proximity to the universities, there are some
poorly maintained buildings whose owners attempt to gouge students. This
area is definitely out of the $700 price range.

Fairview: Mainland area between Joe Howe Drive and Main Avenue. Avoid
apartments in this area on Evans Avenue or below around 100 Main Avenue as
that is a fairly clustered marginal neighbourhood. Areas above Dutch
Village Road are perfectly fine but it is mostly single dwellings with few
apartments.

Clayton Park: Huge sprawling area between Main Avenue and Kearney Lake Road.
This may be the best option for someone new to the city since it is fairly
safe, quiet, clean and inexpensive and is normally within a 20 minute drive
of downtown. In addition, you can easily save parking money by taking one
of the express bus routes that run from Clayton Park to downtown in morning
rush and the reverse in evening rush taking about 20-25 mins. Most of this
area is less than 30 years old so apartment units will tend to be larger and
more modern than you will find on the penninsula. However, many people find
Clayton Park to be ugly and characterless.

Spryfield: General name for mainland area south of the Armdale Rotary.
This area has a bad reputation and has some seedy areas along with many
perfectly fine residential neighbourhoods (such as Leiblin Park). However,
I would still avoid the area for people unfamiliar with the city.

Dartmouth: I would suggest passing on Dartmouth since accessibility to the
city can be difficult with toll bridges and bad rush hour traffic to contend
with. Dartmouth itself is a sprawling area without much of a downtown core.
It would be worth considering getting an apartment unit near the downtown
area from which you could take the ferry to downtown Halifax. However, I
would suspect these units would be far more than $700. Avoid the area
between Micmac Mall and Burnside Industrial Park, especially the area around
Albro Lake as this is probably the highest crime area in the city.

Bedford/ Sackville: Bedford is a very affluent and expensive town and is
about 25-30 minutes from downtown Halifax in rush hour. Traffic on the
Bedford Highway can be a nightmare. Sackville is a more middle class area
but it fairly far from the downtown core. You may also want to consider
communities further away from the city such as Waverley and Fall River and
Hammonds Plains if you have a vehicle. Although you will have a longer
commute, rents will be cheaper, the area will be quieter and units will
generally be larger.

As Fido has suggested, please search the forum for other Halifax related posts(several of which were posted by me).

If you are new to the Halifax area and want to live in 'month to month' arrangements, then your best bet is to live in Dartmouth. There are a cluster of apartment complexes around Albro Lake Road/Drive that are safe, cheap and offer month to month leases. There is plenty of transportation avaliable to come to downtown Halifax or elsewhere transferring at Bridge terminal or of course taking the ferry...

If you want to live in Halifax and get good bang for your buck, then select Clayton Park. It is very well connected to the rest of the city and offers good reasonably priced apartments. Also, almst everything is available in the Clayton Park area itself including Bayers lake shopping centre.

I am not sure I would describe it as characterless, but I can't think of living elsewhere in Halifax. However, in Fairview, 290 Main Ave. is a nice building as well....

Not sure about any PG sort of arrangements. Halifax is certainly not Toronto in those regards..

Hi, I am a 28 year old guy, looking for a room mate, to share a 2 bedroom apartment, in the Dartmouth area. You could move in as early as Nov 1. The apartment is rather spacious, is in a very convenient location close to the major highways and bus routes. There are many convenience stores, restaurants and shops close by, and a couple major malls within a 15 drive. It is only about 15 - 20 min drive from downtown Halifax. Sharing the internet, cable, and a home phone line is also optional (I already have a wireless internet running). I don''t have much furniture, but I do have a 46 inch tv hooked up to a ps3, so you''d be more than welcome to use it. The price for the room itself would be $280 per month, and comes with free parking. Thanks, Rishi

Good Luck.

FH.
