I dont have a clue to why I am here. As far as I am concerned, this country more than qualifies for a third world country. But thank god I was there when my dad left us. Before my dad passed away I used to think abt the inevitable and I would just pray that I should be there to help him when it happens and though I did not believe in God he did grant my wish I guess. Sometimes when think abt it, I feel that it is not worth it at all. I belonged to middle class in India, Singapore & US and now I belong to middle class in Canada. What difference does it make. I think at the end of the day one will be happy where ones family & friends are. Atleast thats me I guess.

Not to burst anyones bubbles but w.r.t the OP
cost of 2-way tickets to India =2000$(aprox)
A weeks stay in india= 1000$(?)
Unpaid leave for 1 week=500k approx
Total-=3.5k
Time taken to earn the same at 10-15$/hr=2-4 months
If people are buying houses at 200k + with sizeble parts of it being their mortgages...3.5k does not seem to be much in comparision. I'm guessing the person/s also has credit cards etc. I'm also quite sure any employer would give unpaid leave for 1 week under those circumstances.
Ofcourse if one thinks saving 3.5k is more important, its a different story. Then you probably have your answer, shanks.
I guess its a matter of priorities. Just like belonging to a place is a state of mind rather than the physical limitation or the UNDENIABLE FACT its implied to be in the OP.

Its very valid at this point of time when INR appreciating against USD, wheather to immigrate to developed countries or not for those who are in late 30s & early 40s. It is very important for a prospective immigrant like to who has completed almost 5 years from the date of receipt & STILL waiting to hear from CIC.
Further discussion on this will help to the applicants who are waiting to migrate. They can decide & plan for their life.

Great topic by shankaracharya and equally thoughtful replies by everyone.
There is a silver lining in the decision we have all made.
1) Let’s say, I had stayed back in India in order to be with my parents. Then 10 years down the line, my kid decides to move to Canada (like everyone else). Then, i and my kid will be the ones suffering the separation pangs. I will be the one missing my precious grandchildren.
2) Consider the present scenario, when my kids grow up and decides to move. How far can they go? Maybe Vancouver..Maybe Detroit or texas. Its still couple of hrs from us whether to visit them or spend time with grandchildren . Our children will always have us to fall back upon in good and bad times. They will always have someone to visit during their holiday breaks. They will always have the parental help available to raise their children.
The first generation immigrants will HAVE to make sacrifices. Both us and our parents.... so that the next generation can prosper.
I try to minimize the extent of this pain by visiting parents at least once a year. If that’s not possible, I get my parents to visit us every alternate year. Yes, this costs me a packet. But, this is a small price to pay for the precious little time our parents have left in them.
Someday, you will have enough money to travel first class and tons of vacation time.... but you may not have anyone left to visit.
