Hi Everyone ,

This is my first post in charcha , but for past few years i have been going through some discussions here . So, I must appreciate all the people who are contributing thier thoughts and giving the people ground reality of living in CANADA.

To start with I am 26 yrs of age . a Network Administrator working and staying in New Delhi with more than 4 yrs of exp , Masters degree in computers from Symbiosis Pune and few certifications in networks . I have a resonably good job earning more than 6 Lacs per annum + perks . I applied for the Canadian immigration in Sep 2006 and hoping to get the PR by 2010.

Ok many time its discussed and more or less we have come to a conclusion that INDIA is best as far as IT jobs are concerned , even I agree to the same. However , the only thing comes now is the lifestyle . I visited Singapore and malaysia like 6 months back and found where Indian cities actualy stand . With so many jobs in urban cities like Delhi , Banglore , Pune , Mumbai etc ... lot of people from other cities or states are migrating here making these places hell !!! . Traffic , pollution , parking issues , water shortage , electricity are jut few issues . If this is what happening now what's gonna happen after lets say 10 yrs !! ?? The major issue is that these problems are just gonna increase ....

Now only question I have is what to do ??? stay here and whole life get frustrated with all these issues in India or stay in a clean environment that of canada ..... ?? As a person i dont really like too many people around so lonliness is not an issue with me ... becuz of which lot people come back from Canada or USA ...

Looking forward to some honest suggestions ... thanks in advance !! :)

Congratulations. You know what you want.

Yes the biggest plus of living in canada is quality of life. Clean environment, no corruption, freedon to do what you want and not dictated by the society.

On the job front too, I am positive that work environment is better in Canada than in India. What I heard is that even as programmer the normal work cultre is to work as programmer for few yeras and then move up to be a manager where you loose the touch for real skill. That is what everybody does. So if you are a programmer who really loves programming and wants to do only programming for the rest of your life it is a problem. However, in Canada you get to do what you want i.e. if you love programming and want to do programming rest of your life, nobody looks down upon you. But the big issue is getting a job you want or in your field in Canada.

So do your research. Find out if people with similar background as yours i.e. age, qualifications, experience have migrated and what is their experience in getting jobs here. That wll give you a better idea of what you can expect when you come to Canada.

A classic case of 'the grass is green on the other side '

I am not saying that it is (esp these days ;) ) or it is not but nothing in life comes for free ...... visit Canada , live for a couple of years and I bet you will start missing India as much as those people here who might wish to relocate back to India for a salary of 6 lacs plus or as I read in the TOI today about the OCI ' chikus' from the UK who are returning to India after 25 years .

Set your priorities straight , experience Canada be flexible on both sides and gradually you will be able to decide . It will be a tough choice you bet .

Hmmm and not to forget the advent of Sone ka Chaand and Sone ke Taare's taking over your jobs :)..oh and did I forget ? there are some others also ...like OBC's for example ? If you are one of these..my apologies to you :) If you are not..then welcome to Canada ! India is for SC-ST-OBC's, by SC-ST-OBC's and of SC-ST-OBC's....

BTW
"lot of ppl from other states"...any pointers to which state you are referring to ? I know, when it comes to Delhi it has to be only 2 states :D
Sorry all ya folks from those 2 states !

If I were you, I would atleast come to Canada and see if I like it here or not. You can always return with a Canadian passport.

Thanks all for your response ....

I am just trying to put the true picture of India as of now .. lot of people staying in canada/usa or UK are thinking becuz of the current economy boom India has become a better place to live ..... I FULLY DISAGREE TO THAT ...

yes you might find a good job here .. but chances are that it will be a night shift ...
The salary with 5 yrs of exp will be around 6 - 10 lacs with 20-30 % Tax deduction ... but the issue is what will u do with this money ??? It takes me almost 1hr to reach office from my house ( just 15 Kms ) due to heavy traffic jams ..... i know even in US or canada it takes an hour but the office - home distance is normaly 40 - 50 km . Its less frustrating by driving 40 km then getting stuck in a jam after every 5 - 10 min . Will money help me in this ???

Lot of shopping malls are coming up in Gurgaon / delhi / Noida ( Or NCR ) its great but where is the electrcity to run them ... they only work on gensets . In gurgaon the normal electricity outage is 6-8 hrs a day and in delhi like 4-6 hrs noida is also same. again it takes 15 min just to park your car and again 15 min to take it out in shopping malls.

Yeah ottawa_nerd i m talking abt those two states only which you know. Seems like you are also from delhi .... When our delhi's chief minister Shiela Dikshit pointed about this it became a major issue in parliamnet . This is what our f****** politicians look out for . If someone says the truth they just can't take it and try to make it a political issue. The solutions for this issue would be to develop more cities in india of the lesser states so that they don't migrate to other cities . Now a delhite like me has to leave my own place and settle down somewhere else ....

I am not SC/ST/OBC but yes they are taking our jobs( goverment ) and most importantly seats in college/ schools . Well no private companies have reservations for SC/ST/OBC but from next year 50 % of the seats will be reserved for this class in colleges and school . Welcome to India for those who are thinking to come back here ..... where do u think ur children will study .. ???

Fido i know \" the grass is greener on the other side\" ... but depends which grass you prefer .. things are difficult in canada .. but atleast the basic necessities u get without much of a struggle .. here from morning till night you fight to get these things but i am sure there its obvious u will get them . I work 6 days in a week and like 9 hrs a day ... where is time to spend my money ? 7 th day u can only rest and get ready for another battle .... :shoot: ha ha ....

Thanks lana2005 and sallusworld for your advice .... i guess the best idea would be to come canada and stay for some time .. I would be around 30 when I will be in canada after immigration so i have the time and age to come back india even if things don't workout .... :)

what you guys say ????

Dragoman,

I was in the same boat as you last year. I was earning a good salary in India. I got my PR and I came to canada last year for completing landing procedures. I also wanted to check out the lifestyle, job scene etc. Luckily for me, I interviewed with a company during that time and they made me an offer which I accepted after evaluating all pros and cons.

You can make a lot of money in India; however, the cities are already bursting at the seams. And the situation does not seem to be getting better. So, I wanted to least try out living in Canada to get a better standard of living. And I am glad I did :)

The IT job market in Canada is small; however, you have to be persistent and if you are good, you can land a nice job. Also, I made it a point to come to Canada only on my own terms ... only after finding a good job that paid well and that met all my criteria. I had the freedom to choose what I wanted just because I was not in any desperation.

Hope that helps you :)

Let me know if you have any questions.

Ash
