Hi,
Recently once of my friend happen to see my gas bill from enbridge and told me that he think it is far too much for my family size. We are 4 people, my parents, my wife and me. My house is a bungalow and not that big.
We use gas only for heating water and furnace. For cooking and everything else its electricity.
To give you an idea my last months gas bill was $350
I am being charged by direct energy and enbridge.
thanks
rumi
ya it sounds a lil high - are you paying this same flat rate every month?

Also check the temperature setting on the hot water tank. If it's set too high it will continue to burn keeping the tank full of hot water even when you're not using it. They have tankless water systems at stores like home depot which only warms the water when needed if that's an option for you.

Some of the measures I take to control the gas bills:
Sign up for the equal billing method where you get one fixed amount every month.
Close the vents in the rooms and spaces that you use minimally. Keep the door shut in the rooms the vents are closed.
Keep the blinds open to let sunlight in and that would warm the room during cold days.
Keep the thermostat setting as cold as comfortable for you and family. We keep ours at 67 deg F when we are there home and 60 F when we are not home. Ours is a 24hr/7 day programmable thermostat.
One way to offset the colder setting on the thermostat is to shut the doors of the rooms that you use so the heat is trapped inside the room and stays warmer than the actual thermostat setting.
If you have large open area or high ceiling, use of a ceiling fan (with the direction of the fan in such a way that air is pushed down) would help. This is called destratification. Hot air rises and the height at which the thermostat is located gets cooler. So getting hot air down helps.
