- Normal (e.g. Basmati) Rice: High GI food - avoid it
- Parboiled rice: Low GI food.
- Dal: Low/medium GI depending upon the type. E.g. Chana dal has a very low GI.

Both my mom and aunt have diabetes and my aunt also had to undergo cataract operation. Offspring of diabetic patients have a 70% chance on “inheriting “ it and I am a bit worried about this. To avoid this I maintain a very healthy vegetarian diet with strict exercise regime. I avoid sweets, rice, fried foodstuff and junk food.
MR is right about karela because one of my friends was a diabetic and after he started having karela in both his meals plus walking 4 kilometers every day he was able to lose a lot of weight and could maintain his blood sugar level.
Aren’t Indians more susceptible to diabetes and high blood pressure? Is it a genetic defect or has it got to do with all the sugar and ghee that is loaded in our “traditional” diets?
