Cd's,
It has been known that Canada has good job prospects for some kind of professions. One of them was software, where there are a lot of people working on work permits, being brought from India.
Another trend that i have found out in USA and Canada, are Post Doctoral fellows. Desi People who do their B.Sc, M.Sc. and then their Ph.D in life sciences professions like Chemistry , Physics, Biology etc... are employed in significant numbers as Post Doctoral fellows in the U Of T, Univ. Of Waterloo, MaC Master, A university at London to name a few.
Recently I seem to bump into a lot of these fellows (The ones that i have seen in the GTA are mostly from TN and who donot even have much English Speaking ability). They are very well paid. The reason that they gave me was that most of the local post doctoral fellows go to USA for employment and hence the university has to bring Desi post doctoral fellows. Also since the univ. budget is low, these Desi PDF (Post Doctoral Fellows) are brought in with lower pay.
Why i am telling the board is b'cos of this reason. If any CD's relatives, friends, spouses are PDF's and located in Desi Land and who are interested in coming abroad, then they should see the Webpages of these universities to apply. It seems that they need reference letters from the professors under whom they did their Ph.D.
I met a group in centre Island ,some 8 months back and it I saw around 10 families from the univ. of Toronto. Most of them were from remote regions of Tamil Nadu (very small villages) and they had done their M.Sc. in Tamil.

Interesting information there. Are they now doing their Phd in a Canadian university? Or is it that they already have a Phd from India and are working at the Canadian university?

Thanks.

Speech by Thomas Friedman of The New York Times....

"When we were young kids growing up in America, we were told to eat our
vegetables at dinner and not leave them. Mothers said, 'think of the
starving children in India and finish the dinner.' And now I tell my
children: 'Finish your maths homework. Think of the children in India
who would make you starve, if you don't.'"

Usually these people are on fellowships, here to pursue their PhD theses and at the same time be TAs or teaching assistants. Some may be full fledged professors also.

This is based only from experience I have had with them. There were many way back when as well. It is not a new thing.

I remember when they were relatively few SAs in university and India was not internationally known for their schools and abilities- the students (incl the SAs) used to make fun of their accents especially when they said F, m,n a, o etc.

Like in F=ma (basic physics equation )

Plenty in the USA as well even in Ivy League schools.

By the way TK if you know some of them personally and if they would like to be interviewed for a human interest story for a newspaper ,let me know. I will be glad to do so.

Investpro and Others,
I was introduced to them by an Individual and really have no personal contact with them so far.
They are here in Jobs and not to do their Thesis etc... They are hired by the university to work/ research/ teach in the same way as professors are selected. They are Post Doctoral fellows, meaning that they already have a P.hD. from India and that they are fellows (maybe similar to a reader) at the University.
They are not under any assistanship but are paid a salary. They are on Work permit with their spouses with them. I belive that maybe the spouses were also issued with a open work permit (my guess) as all the PDF's that i have seen have their spouses with them and generally Candian govt. would have have issued visitor's visa for all of them.

I fall under the other category. Did a Phd in Canada and now in my 3rd year as a Post-Doc fellow here in the USA.

There are PhD's from India who come to Canada to do their Post-doc's and yeah, they are paid less. I knew of one post-doc at our Uni (in Ottawa) in the Chemistry Dept.

I too wanted to do a Post-doc in Canada. Only when I didnt succeed that I came to the USA and it has been a rewarding experience. I dont know about a work permit issued for spouses for Post-Doc's. Maybe someone concerned with immigration can answer that question.

PR's and Citizens of Canada have access to NSERC scholarships or post-doc fellowships. In addition, one can get access to NSERC Industrial Fellowships..you work in the industry, 20K is paid by the Govt and 20K by the industry. The industry also pays some top up award. But these scholarships are quite competitive !..So the easy option..Move down south with a TN visa :)
