RENTERS SCAM ! BEWARE.

I had posted a classified ad to let out my basement. Here's the text of two similar emails I got from two different persons. It looks like some ingenious scam, created by some creative guy, Just a reminder that we live in a very dangerous society..

thanks.

Hello,

I would like to know if your place is still available for rent. Please i
would appreciate it if i could get a few pictures of the place if it is
still available as i am not in a position to come and take a look at
the place and i need to show them to my dad.He is the one incharge of all
the payments arrangements. Please note that i am highly interested in
your place.

Well here is a little about myself.i am a young lady of 26,from
edgeware,in london.I am honest,cheerful,very open, a christain.I am not a neat
freak, buti believe in keeping my enviroments clean.I am from a family
of 3,i have 2elder brothers who are both married and living in seperate
countries.I live over here with my dad who is also out of town to carry
out a construction project in Spain.Well.i am not sure if all that i
have stated is nessesary..but i am not sure what you want to know about
me.It would be more helpful if you could kindly specify what you want to
know.

Well,i am actually coming down for my Masterate Degree programme with
the Universities and hoping to find myself a home away from home.I am
looking for a short time lease, but if i end up liking the place i might
decide to finally settle down.I am hoping to move in before the end of
this month (January). It all depends on soon so i can get a suitable
place.

Hmm .,.a little more about me.I love kids, animals, very easy to get
along with.Well ..that's all i can think of for now. Please get back to me
with the actual monthly rent plus the utilities and let me know if you
are comfotable with the short time lease so i could have my dad contact
you as regards the payments...Happy New Year.

Hope to hear from you.

Thanks alot.

Mary.

The scam is simple. Once you answer this, the "dad" will ask for your account number to deposit the money via electronic transfer. If you give them a number, they will try to withdraw funds. If that does not work they will send you an official email that says the money is held up because the transferring bank needs a small payment to release this large sum of money (usually about 2x the annual rent). If you enquire why the large amount, the Dad will say it is just so that if his daughter needs anything like furniture etc. you can give her the cash. So if you send cash, they'll come back with a larger amount because the amount being transfered to you is so large!

In the end, you'll never hear from them or the cash. I read this on a scam site.. i cannot find it right now. If I do I'll post it here.

I had similar experiences. They will send a large fraud check and ask some money in return. By time you come to know from the bank it is fraud cheque, you have already sent money to these guys.

For overseas guys I normally ask them their copy of their visa and passport. If they are fraud, then you wont hear from them again.

Regards
Jay

My ex landlady had a similar experience recently . A person inquired about everything and then never turned up..... she was wondering if thats an identity theft....

BL : Is it possible to add this piece of info / url to this thread in the Classifieds section / form when a person is posting an advertisement ? . Coz not very many posters are aware of this ......

Not a bad idea. I'd like to incorporate this along with some bullets on what to look out for while posting.

Let me look into this.

Even if the same email was received from two different email id i do not smell scam so far .

lets look at facts
if i gave my bank account no for transfer of money a person can only deposit money not withdraw , bank card id is different from account no for e transfer
i understand precaution is better but my case i was looking for accomodation and used the same matter for posting and replying on craig s list
