The cons. can you define "indianness"? I was able to : learn indian languages, eat indian food, learn indian culture, values, family expectations, etiquette etc. I also learned classical dance, bhangra, how to write hindi/punjabi" .

Accept that u r a Canadian. Just by learning an indian language (for that matter even French is a language) or learning an Indian dance does not make u an Indian. U may disagree and argue. It does not matter at all. U r a Canadian and accept it.

DIO

I agree. I was asking for clarification on what is 'indianness'. recognizing that what it is is very subjective and the definition will vary from one individual to the next.

But to the bigger audience the question still remains open - Canada or India ??

Lets revive some dead horses for those who are interested . For others --well they are free to say --pass !

If you look at the thread again, you will notice that it was not jake3d that changed the thread. Someone wrotethat I should accept that i am a canadian. I think that was the digression.

If a person opens up a thread and asks for opinions, it is possible that some discussion will result. Even productive as a word can be defined subjectively.

India is good for IAS, IPS, big politicians, film stars, Indian celebrities, super rich businessmen and God. At that level there is not too much difference between India and western world.

India may be good if everything is going good but if you get struck with court, lawyer, police, big accident, big medical problems then you will know real India and you will get phd in Indian constitution by going 100 times court/police station. Your degree, experience, English accent all will be kicked by Omvir Havaldar, Delhi Police. Most frustrated thing, you can not do anything just "sir please + MahtmaGandhi 500". If you can not speak Haryanvi with Omvir Havaldar then you hve to pay Rs 1000.

Having stayed in Canada for 4 months , I am trying to establish whether I have left my Indian roots behind ?? Will my children not regain the same culture that was and till now continue to be a part of me .

Will they have to leave vegetarianism which is essential to me ? Will I have to do the same in my own lifetime ?

Trying to answer these to myself and asking others if they also feel something similar.

Why is it that I feel myself as an alien when I am in the bus or on the streets ??

Why is it that could not enjoy Thanksgiving or Halloween or Christmas and why was Diwali non existtent ??

Why is it that I never had this feeling before when in India ??

At the same time : India comes with a lot of pollution , poulation pressure and a crime / corruption ridden society -

trying to weigh one against the other -- Do others also feel the same or am I the only one ??

naaaah...was it that?.

Its digression only if someone who disagrees with the TCSF(tamil culture squad and friends) do it. Digression is a term used to settle past scores with 'Bhramasutras' that cook for 4 hrs until it just becomes unbearable and bursts thru. :D

Thats prolly why Fido mentioned the 45kinr earning requirements. So you can probably summerize that thats the cutoff for any comparision. Anyone earning less than that(which is the majority of the country) is in deep shit. For that matter Sierra leone is a great place to live in if you are an elite person.

Income Levels and Poverty:

With over a quarter of the world's poor concentrated in India, poverty is the government's biggest priority.

Classified as a "low income" country by the World Bank with a GNI (gross national income) of $450. (2006 figures put it at 720$)
Great inequality in the distribution of wealth: the richest tenth of households hold 33% of wealth, while the poorest tenth only hold 3%
29% of the population lives below the poverty line; 70% of these people reside in rural areas
86% of the population lives under $2 per day; 44% lives under $1 per day
25% of the population does not have enough money to eat adequately
Because of the high levels of poverty in the countryside, huge numbers of migrants are flocking to the cities in search of a job and a better life. The cities cannot support this swelling much longer, meaning that rural living must be improved to retain people.

I know people from India who have overcome those feeling within a cpl of months. Some others never do.

e.g: I do not feel alien in the bus-stop or the streets(though i did when I first arrived).

I personally think the 'settling in' process varies for different people. This process is natural when one is taken out of an environment one is used to and placed into another. The capacity to adapt and change rests on a number of variables.

Thats why it was mentioned at the onset that its a 'personal' choice that cannot be measured objectively. There are too many variables.

I have living experience in Vancouver and Calgary. Where mostly Indians/Paki live (Surrey-BC, Calgary NE) both are full of crime, cheapest place in city, dirty. You will see very few Indians in downtown Vancouver, North or West Vancouver, Calgary SW area which is most effluent, clean, least crime area of city, near to mountains.

I don’t understand why people stick in same bad area/neighborhood even living after 10 yrs here and some of them are making good money.

One thing is sure in general, there is big difference Indian society here and in USA.
