Thanks dimple2001 ..if it takes <1week and as per your experience 1 day+mail time which could be 1week overall..thats good enough for me.I was concerned to see 1 week as processing time +mail time on cgitorontowhich was too much coz we have to be in India by 10th April and will get my daughter's passport on 2nd April.
Good Day.

I sent mine out via UPS overnight with paid overnight return as I had an upcoming Mexico trip. I got mine back on the third day. I'll save the India vs.Canada endless battle for the other thread that is 10 pages long and going ;) but, these chaps are quite efficient in sending back the passport with visa and all the originals in record time and safely.

If you mail the passport via a trackable mail (Canada post registered or private courier), you can enter the tracking info on CGI website to see if processing is completed or not.

All these apply only to Canadians of Indian origin and Canadians born in Canada.

passport
there is NO requirement for a foreigner to carry his/her old passport when visiting india.

that is what the canadian citizens are...foreigner (by law) in india

some customs officers try to see if there is a 'bakra' among the arrivals but there is no suc requirement to carry a 'cancelled' passport

the vlid passport ( in this case ...canadian) is sufficient + valid visa or PIO card

Applying for Indian Visa
I am Canadian citizen and applying for Indian visa for the first time. The Indian Embassy web site says that I need to submit my Indian passport with my application;

"Persons, who earlier held Indian passports, while applying for visa must submit their Canadian passport with last Indian visa endorsement or their previous Indian passport (cancelled or otherwise) and Landing paper."

Please help clarify.

-Ben

All they want to see is whether they have cancelled your Indian passport or not. For first time visa applicants, therefore, they need your Indian passport which they will stamp cancelled and return to you while they issue a visa on your Cdn passport.

For the second time and on, you don't need to send your Indian passport since they will be able to see the "visa endorsement" on your Cdn passport. This previous visa is indication that your Indian passport has already been long cancelled.

Hope this helps.

- Did you also have to submit your Canadian citizenship card (wallet sized card).
- Is this timeline for Adults too (the question started with the case of an infant)

Problems at customs in Canada and India
Hi,

I have noticed that one of the community in India who get stuck everytime at either immigrations. Out of curiousity I asked one of custom officers in India about why almost 4 out of 5 them took them longer to clear. His answer was precise - some of the people there especially from rural areas have done every trick in the book to get out illegally. So they check them more.In other words there are more chances of fleecing them out of their money.

Same happens in Canada where all Indians are considered scamsters and check twice as for years illegal migrants and alike have ruined the reputation whatsoever. But then they were never there for making reputation or love for the country - new and old.

If you are a PIO, they do not stamp any visa on the passport, so you have to carry the PIO booklet.

They are not handing out any laminated cards for the PIO/OCI holders.

A quick clarification...as you said, I got the lifelong visa on my Canadian passport in addition to the OCI booklet ..

But, what if your canadian passport expires within 5 years and your new canadian passport is without the lifelong OCI stamp in it...will this not pose a problem in india?

thanks

seenappa

the call center person said that you have to carry the old passport with oci visa new passport and also oci booklet when the old passport is expired

for pio just go to the conuslate and ask them to print new passport number in the pio booklet

having pio means that old passport issued from india is already cancelled when they gave pio so no need to carry that in my poinion

Yes , the OCI stamped Visa on the Canadian PP is very important.

The OCI booklet is just a joke , they should get rid of it , as it only confuses people. They think that's enough to enter India.

You need BOTH ..OCI booklet + OCI stamped Visa on Canadian PP ..Carry the old expired Canadian PP with you & the new one if the OCI stamp is on the old expired Canadian PP.
