I've never voted Conservative but Harper seems to emerging as a strong willed, unambiguous and decisive PM thus far. His talk on China(though the Chinese will dust it off on their onward march) and North Korea(I dont think the despot Kim cares much either), support for Israel etc.
Harpers recent motion has stunned the separatists. Ofcourse, they WILL regroup and try to ride the motion to back their sovereignist agenda. In the short term however, it seems to be masterful stroke on Harpers part.
While the liberals are scrambling in disarray to find the right leader and the NDP lacks mass appeal, the conservatives with Harper seem to shine brighter all the time.

It was very foolish of the PM (or any political leader) to call Quebec as a nation within a nation. It will only lead Quebec drift further away from theCanadian mainstream. Quebec is a part and parcel of a united Canada. I donot understand how people can use this notion for political reasons.
My area MP (Micheal Ignatiff) said that he considers Quebec as a nation and this led to wide spread critism and he immediately changed his stand saying that the word "Nation" differs with languages and that his interpretation language was that a nation means a "community".
I am really at a loss to see how the federal govt. fails to put forth harsh rules to bring Quebec people into the mainstream Canada. They should see democracies like Indian where the province borderlines define separation of people speaking different languages and how united we are. Maybe we need a KPS Gill or a TN Seshan to run this country.
Quebec has been and should be a part of United Canada. Period. I also hate to see Quebec being given the royal treatment while economic engines such as Ontario still continue to see a cut of revenue given by Ottawa.
TK A
Sidenote : An Egyptian Architect told me that Ottawa is interested in keeping Canada within its fold due the revenue that it brings to ottawa. Quebec is also very rich in minerals and that is another reasons. May be Quebecors can explain it better.

I am a Gents and not a Ladies.
This whole thing is nothing but a political gimmick. The tories want to get some foothold in quebec where they are a distant third after the Bloc and liberals.
"Nation within a nation"? Doesn't make much sense.. creates more confusion than it solves. It will create an unneccessary divide between quebec and the rest of Canada. It is also dangerous to some extent. In the long run , it will lead to the seperation of quebec and the ultimate breakup of Canada. It is dangerous for quebec also as the English speaking provinces will merge with the USA , leaving it isolated. It was Quebec which was keeping USA out of Canada as Americans cannot tolerate multiculturalism. With Quebec out of the picture, Americans can take over the rest of Canada easily.
C'mon Mr Harper display some wit instead of empty political rhetoric
I think you are forgetting what the Quebecors want. The Bloc was set to introduce the motion of 'Quebec is a nation' this very day.
This would have set the scene for the next referundum in Quebec. The Bloc would also gain the advantage of seeming to be the Quebecors vanguard and protector. Like it or not, most Quebecors have a strong sence of Quebecois identity. I think the rest of the Canadian public(as seen on this thread) underestimates this sense of Quebec identity. Quebecors relate more to 'Quebec' than to 'Canada'. So it was inevitable that the Bloc's position would find favor in quebec.
However, now with this move Harper has undercut the Bloc's premise. Harper said 'Quebec is a nation ***within Canada***'.
Thus Quebecors get their cake, the Canadians get to eat it too.
The blocs hurting right now

After Quebec it is the turn of Missisuaga and Brampton. What shall we call this new nation "India" or "Punjab" ?
