Hi folks

This is my first ever post on the site but I have read many comments in charcha. It is very informative but not fully reliable. Well My concern at this momemt is about teching in ontario. It has been 1 and a half years since I got the license to teach from OCT. After 1 year I got an interview I got an interview call. I could have gone through the interview provided I had Canadian experience. Now the obvious question arises who will provide u the Canadian exp. no one but the answer is volunteering. I also volunteered as lunch room supervisor and library assistant but they need teaching experience. I also tried to get into schools as supply teacher as a volunterr but no use. Then I got pregnant and now I have 2 months old baby. So I cannot even think of it. I don't know if it is my bad luck. But I am still cool and just waiting for the right time. But isn't the system here frustrating. Why even the qualified and eligible persons have to go through all this.

Friends I just need some reference from teachers who have gone steps ahead of me. so that I can also win the race.

all type of suggestions most welcome.

Since you have not written your location I cannot guide you specifically - but in case you are in GTA, do register with TDSB, YRDSB and Peel Board as a supply teacher. The registration has a process which if filling up some forms and getting a police clearance.

After that, depending on the Board's policy, they might ask you to supply at one school for some time under a principal who would give a report on your performance to the Board, or simply wait for calls for supply. Sometimes you might have to supply is as many as 25-30 schools depending on what has been your qualification (primary/priomary-junior/secondary) before you can be considered for a permanent position.

One piece of advice - just like any other place, keep the secretary of the school in good humour - she is the one who places orders for supply many a times.

Thanks for ur reply. I live in Mississauga. I am already registered with PDSB and applying for different posts. I also spoke to the principal and v princi regarding hiring. But unless I get sign on with the board which means getting through an interview, I cannot avail any opportunity in the school. I spoke to the board also they said the same thing. Last year when I was on the interview they wanted canadian experience. that time I had license for intermediate school. Now I have done the course for junior grade also. I didnot register with any other board as I thought it won't be feasable for me. But still I should do so.

Simpral - some advice from an experienced person:

1. To teach, you definitely have to polish your speaking and writing skills in English language - you presently do not seem to have them. Work on it as a priority. Such thing is not necessary for many other jobs, but for this job, you definitely need it.

2. Yes you should have some Canadian experience before you become a permanent teacher. That experience will include you being referred to by your name by a student, rather than "teacher please"! It will include not frowning upon if you see students sitting on the desks rather than chairs during a "formal" session with parents called the orientation session and things like it.

3. As a parent, I would not like to send my child to a teacher who does not bring Canadian experience because teaching in classrooms is entirely different here when compared to Asia - and as parents, that was one of the important reasons we chose to come to Canada.

4. Don't be afraid of interviews - get interview experience if not anything else!

5. Try to volunteer even in montessory schools.

6. Build up a rapport with teachers and secretaries in school even when you go there for lunch monitoring.

7. Volunteer in the classrooms as parent helper - every teacher loves to have extra help!

Thanks for your good advice. I really appreciate it. However I don't fully agree with you.

I had an experience with the students here when I was a Lunch Supervisor. I was shocked to see their behavior and was wondering how the Teachers would be tackling all this. In India nobody would mind if their kids are slapped or scolded but here its really hard to control them. I did make an effort to get the reference from different schools. I even made it. At this moment I cannot go out for all this cos my baby needs full attention. But still I am not afrraid of struggle just waiting for the right time.
May I know more details of your occupation and about you.
