Diwali, Holi & Navratri are my personal Favourites. We will find Colors and lights in all 3. But celebration differs.

Diwali to me is more of family festival, so it is still quite possible to enjoy the way you do in India. Even fire crackers. With so much of 'diversity' talk here that it is even possible to easily get couple days off. One can be with family on Diwali.

Holi brings my friends and the time that was spent with them back in memory. Weather plays big part in not celebrating Holi the way we are used. I am not sure even if weather permitted - one would come out same way. As you mentioned EVERYONE is on the wavelength back home. Who cares - Holi Hai ! I think Holi suffers most.

Navratri is mix - where time is divided with family & friends. I go out on all 9 days and play. Actually this time we played quite late on couple occasions. So it is better than Mumbai in that sense. I have no problem going out all alone and play. But I have heard complains - its not the same, I miss my 'langotiya yaar'. Music is not same. Crowd is not same.

Regarding celebrating Christmas, our celebration is limited to attending Christmas party from work, attending kid's Christmas party from work, having some photos with Santa in the malls, and exchanging gifts with neighbour.

GG,
I did not expect you to be partaking in the Xmas Mass at the local parish :). I know the celebrations are at a superficial level. Just like how most Christians celebrate diwali in India. I'm assuming that your level of participation in Xmas is a bit more now, compared to India. Ofcourse if you were living in a Christian majority state, locality in India...it would be around the same.

Hey maybe we at CD should organise a CD 'Holi' get-together in Toronto for next year. Throw it open to all communities. Yeah its probably going to be indoors and that poses all kinds of logistical problems but it would still be fun.

I think this is what I was inquiring about. Part nostalgia, part cultural isolation?

One of the problem is that it comes during Winter. I think this is a not big problem. We can do it indoors, however who is going to clean the floor? So the only option is to do it in open.

I am a Swadhyayee and we do celebrate both the Holi and Dhuleti togather in the park. Yes, there are piles of snow, but we could manage to do it by using only color powder (no liquid). It does spoil winter coats but hey who cares when you are enjoying?

Apparently all you have to do is pay extra cleanup fees .

Wll the good news is that Holi 2007(correct me if I'm wrong) falls on a saturday. The bad news... March 3rd. Playing outside will kill the fun. Brrrrr!

When I lived in BC last year, we celebrated Holi the very usual way we do in India. Instead of playing colours outside, we did that in the basement hall of the temple and, as it turned out, we had to repaint the whole basement the weekend after.

as for me, no matter what the ocassion/festival is there is a big difference in celebrating here compared to back home. Of course, there is family, friends, crowds of community, it still somehow becomes a Low-Key affair...as if there is so much missing..more formalized..at times the spirit not coming from "within"...and of course the factors affecting could be fast-life style ( i hope many will agree), part of family is still back home to complete the joy and probably the whole environment (too materialistic??)..well, we still do our best to celebrate & have adapted to the new counrty and are well spirited during Christmas besides our participations around ...It just comes from within as you grow Canadian..Cheers.
