All of the views expressed below can be politically incorrect and are solely mine. I do not expect anybody to agree to it.

The recent killings of two daughters by a mother somehow has led me to believe that media is more sympathetic towards a woman than towards a man. Yesterday, I was watching CityTV news at 11 PM, and they were showing interivew of an old lady, who happened to be the neighbour of the "killer" lady. She went to great lengths to prove how a great mother and a great person she was.

Since the day incident came into light, not a single media person has condemned the killings. As if there is a rush to somehow glorify the mother by showing her the victim of circumstances!! As to how she was involved in a custody battle.

Now, the theory of post-partum depression is being touted. She might be suffering from same (Same as the lady in Texas who drowned her kids in bathtub). Somehow, media is bent to prove woman innocent!!!

Where does father appear in all such rush? Not a single statement from him. Only a neighbour apperaing on TV saying how devastated he was. But except that, not a single word of compassion for father from the media. As if he does not exist.

Come on - A killer is a killer is a killer. And to kill your own small children is the most heinous crime any person can committ. If post-partum depression is to be blamed, why she did not try to get any help. Why did her family members or neighbours did not help during all those struggling days?? Being a woman does not exempt you anyway from your actions or provide a reason for a justification for your actions. You are a killer.

Had a man committed such a crime, he would be villified by each and every media outlet in this country. All the social activist would be out on the road screaming about existence of such humans in our society. There would be no "post-partum" theories made up to justify the actions of that man.

Man are equally sensitive as woman (and a woman can be equally harsh as a man) It is just the difference in the way that express feelings. Maybe it is inherent, maybe it is imposed.

I am not interested in the outcome of this case, but there is sure a father somewhere in Woodbridge, engulfed in his sorrow with perhaps no one to offer him a shoulder to cry on

Meghal,
As usual you got the concept wrong.
It is only a woman who suffers from post partum depression due to child birth and not a man. So in this case, if the woman was really suffering from post partum depression and she killed her children due to that , she must be sympathised.
Remember, A man is a man. He will or will not take care of his children whereas a woman will take care of her children, no matter what may come. May be the man was a drunkard and the lady thought that the children are better off in heaven instead of being with the man, in case the judge so declares it. Remember if she suffers from post partum depression, she canot make the right decisions too. The man should have understood the gravity of the situation and taken suitable remedial corrections, if he was really taking care of the interests of the family.
I have lived with people who suffer from post partum depression. They need love , care and help in addition to medication. Please donot critisize them. They (the woman) suffers for man too. It is unfair to blame the woman for the killings without knowing if the man was really a good person. Just b'cos the man did not kill the infant(s) does not make him innocent. Maybe he might have provoked the lady to such an extent that she was forced to do the crime. As per your own statement it is said that the neighbours say that she was a terrific person.
And one more thing. It is always difficult for the patient to identify that she is suffering from post partum depression. It is supposed to be the partner / family who can identify this sympton and take the individual to a doctor.
Just my views.

Meghal,

I think your thoughts are valid. I think there is a need in society to 'blame' an external entity ie/ pathologizing everything. If PostPartum depression is common, does this mean all mothers go around killing their children? No, obviously not. There are obviously other factors at work here.

1) Court custody - alleged assault charges against the father. Did the mother have an adequate support system in place?

TK - the father or other family members are not "supposed to know". I found your response to Meghal very condescending and rude. Meghal indicated at the beginning of their post that they are just giving their opinion. You also make judgements that men do not care for children the way women do.

2) Marital problems. Obviously The mother had some big time issues in her life. No mention in the media about Child protection services involvement. Did the mother have a job..nothing was mentioned about this. My point is that other factors rather than "post partum' could be a factor..

from the media it appears that the mother has many problems and issues in her personal life.

You noticed that too? :p

Here I thought I was the only man who cared for his kids. Must be my feminine side :)

Mental illness, poverty, abuse, religious grievance etc can be 'reasons' for destructive behaviour. However 'reasons' should not be confused with justification. It will be tough to draw a line if we did confuse the two.
