CD members,
I want to relate an incident which happened just now. I am working on an urgent project which required me to get some drawings from a project manager. Our client is Canada's largest home builder and the project manager sent me a drawing after a week. Another project manager called my boss and complained why we did not start the drawing for which my boss replied that we did not receive the drawing. The drawing that i received from the PM was incomplete and hence i requested a complete drawing from the other PM and CC'd it to the original PM.
This is what the Original PM replied to me :
{
Use the fri*gin eng drawings that were sent to you. Everybody wants the easy
way out.
Fra*k.
}
I was totally upset that this mail came to me from a supposedly professional PM. What are my options.? Can i take him to court? I still have not complained to my Boss. I am waiting from CD's opinion before proceeding further. I wrote thismail to him back. Please note that i am a consultant. I donot want this idiot to think that all immigrants can be discriminated and abused upon. He knew that i was an immigrant based on my name.
{
Fra*k,
The only reason why I requested the Engineering drawings was because it
shows the driveways, curbs/pavements etc. and hence it would be better to
make a site plan from rather than from a survey drawings. The last two
projects that I had worked on (Mari**lla and S**k Pan**er) were derived from the Engineering drawings. A simple yes/no would have solved the matter. I
did not want to work on the survey plan only later to find out that i should
have worked on the Engineering drawings. M**e told me that Ma**y had told him that the
survey drawings were all along with him and that is why i addressed the mail
to Ma*ny.
Secondly, the language of your last e-mail was totally unprofessional and
unwarrented. I am a professional and work in a professional office and I
dwill not tolerate that kind of language to be used upon me nor any
individual in this country. Neither do i want to use that kind of language
during my professional career. I hope that you realise your
unprofessionalism and feel remorse.
}
I just now checked my e-mail inbox and found the following reply from him.
{
TK, my intention wasn't to piss you off, and I apologize if I did. We
are extremely under pressure over hear and felt that it could be completed
with the eng hard copy you have in your possession. You are a drafting firm
are you not. If you still require the digital version of the eng drawings,
please feel free to call the engineer and see if they would be willing to
provide you with the documentation you require.

Fra*k.
)
And my reply to him :
{
Fra*k,
Thanks for the e-mail.
Please do not think that work pressure is only upon you and that excessive work pressure gives you a right to use foul language. My work hours for the past couple of months has been 7 days a week and around 14-16 hours a day.
As individuals in Canada, I think that the constitution gives each one of
its citizens a basic right of freedom , equality and self respect and just
b'cos we are a drafting firm does not once again give you a right to use
foul language or to act in an unprofessional manner.
I received an e-mail from Ma**y asking me to proceed with the Survey
drawings which i will.
I wish to close this matter once and for all with this e-mail.
TK
}

Dude
Cut this PC crap..
You gave it just as good as you got.. No need to feel discrimination every time you get into spat with someone who looks different than you..
Gimme a break.. these kinda baseless "insults" cheapen and trivialize agony of ppl who indeed face systemic or overt discrimination at workplace..

I feel that there is a certain code of conduct in the work environment and it's good that TK did not get influenced by his feelings and took care of the matter in an assertive, yet professional manner..."giving as good as you get" may only serve to escalate the issue.

I don't think TK turned this into a immigrant issue...he simply let the other person know he would not tolerate that kind of language when being addressed.

CD's,
Till now my anger has not subsided. I really want to take him to court so that he will not try to think that we come to this country to be their slaves or that each immigrant is uneducated or that we donot deserve the basic professionalism that we are entitled to.
If you read his text :
"You are a drafting firm.." he thinks that since he is our client and since he pays our bills, he thinks that he can abuse us all that he wants. He wrote that sentence thinking that after all ours is just a drafting firm composed of some high school dropouts. He does not know/may not be aware that each and every individual working here is a foreign trained architect.
I am waiting for your ideas/ plans on the course of action so that i can take this matter to my boss. If i leave it as such, I am sure that he will try to insult me again/ be smart based on the drawing that i will release to him in a week. So i need to be strong on my side. Also i need to teach him a lesson so that he does not repeat his same attitude to another immigrant/ weak person. May be my boss is at his mercy (since 80% of our projects are from that firm) but i am not.
And i donot know why this happens, but every time i feel insulted like this, my mind always tells me to leave Canada. I donot know why it does not tell me to stay fighting the system but may be that is what i will do (based on my personal circumstances)
TK A
Sidenote :
This is the latest reply that i received from him :

{
TK,
it will never happen again.
Fra*k.
}

If the person has PMP, there are some work ethics he must have passed. Fortunately he did listen and promised that it will not happen again. However if this happens again you may want to talk to the PMI body.

You felt insulted and handled the matter in a mature way. Thankfully, the person involved has apologised and said it will not happen again.

Now TK get out of the inferiority complex mode and move on!

Ofcourse, you can drag it on in your head and this forum and courts to compensate for your feelings of inadequacy(compounded by unprofessional behaviour towards you by the other guy)

Everything is not about you being an 'immigrant'. Its a simple office spat.

Addition: If i were fr*k and was still hounded about the issue after a written apology, I would take my business elsewhere.
