Trust me I also was disillusioned when I met this East European guy from Slovenia .He was a UNIX Administrator and I asked him whether he did any programming also .

To my surprise he replied that he sometimes helped his father who was an architect by building his designs in c++ and Oracle. And when he showed me his code which he used to practice as a 'hobby'.....I was aaaaaaawed to say the least.

C'mon guys, writing code isn't what all software industry is about. Look at all those open source projects - a lot of them don't have proper documentation.

My experience in Canada shows that people from 3rd world countries generally are good programmers. This may have something to do with tremendous patience required of programmers. I have worked with or come across programmers/DBA from almost all 3rd world countries including Russia, Ukraine, Yugoslavia, China, Philipines, Middle east, Indonesia, Poland and of course, india, pakistan, bangla desh, Sri lanka

Nothing special with that. Any country's population have a certain percentage which are intelligent.... in India it just happens that that very percentage is enormous . Plus the english speaking skills . I have heard even Pakistan guy come at a close second in the world IT industry . I wish to ask Lana whether he / she has worked with thousands of such people to conclude such judgment ? I do not have stands .

I have read on this forum before that an average Indian programmer / SW guy is cheap not necassarily good - is that correct ? Sometimes cheap things may be preferrred but that doesnt talk about quality .

Just work in any IT consulting company in Canada and you will find IT folks from the countries I mentioned above. I iwll name the companies if you want.

Yes , I think there are 2 categories of Indian IT folks

One is simply a computer programmer, though bountiful/cheap are not that good. They lack formal education in IT , are typically bcom/bsc graduates , learn some programming language and get hired by Indian IT industry , which recruits thousands of them every day , as testers/junior programmers . They might be an expert the latest API's , might have all those certifications , but lack at innovation or architecting new systems . They are usually good for writing code using established repititive design patterns , but are not trained to do system analysis / design or write systems programming code . Usually , they climb up the IT ladder very slowly .

Other one is as competent as western counterparts , sometimes even better , and are trained in formal IT engineering programs . They can think , research , innovate and design . Some of them go abroad for graduate programs , while some work as system analysts / project managers / architects and other lead roles , and are trend-setters . They might not know latest programming language syntax , probably are not even certified , but are quick learners. They ace at systems programming . Most importantly , they can think


Eastern European programmers ace at systems programming , whereas Indian IT programmers focus on applications programming
