If you keep feeling like that, I can almost guarantee that this 'truth' will keep manifesting itself to you again and again :). Focus at length on the negative at you will succeed in making it your 'truth'. All the best in dealing with it.

I'm not asking you to ignore the problem to make it go away. I am only pointing out that a focus on negativity may have negative results if you let it(as you seem to have indicated is hapenning with yoiu in the above sentence).
In some cases one can use negative situations +vely e.g: Social activists raising awareness, changing govt attitudes etc.

Land of Opportunities - if you can find one.
Free Medical - If you can find doctor. People say "you are lucky if you survived from sickness"
Free Education - School teachers were on strike due to workload and big classes. (No need to tell about Hydro workers strike and others)

The term Opportunity is exactly that, an opportunity. It is not a guarantee. So yes, Canada is a land of opportunity.

Medical is free. Do not quote heresay and anecdoctal evidence. The fact remains, she and her children are and will always be treated without cost. No matter how severe the illness. Workers going on strike is Canada's fault?

Government acknowledge the problems but don't want to take steps to solve it because government interest is in to push more people in labour force by any means. Government knows that poverty but action null.

People come here for different reasons. And not everyone suffers. Do not project your experience on others. Some come here thinking the roads are paved with dole. The goverment is for the people and by the people. I like to go further and say the goverment IS THE PEOPLE. So when someone says "the goverment does nothing", I like to ask what have you done?? Did you find this lady another better paying job? Did you give her one of your used sofa? Or did you just come here and complain? Like JFK said, ask what you can do and NOT what "we the people of canada" (goverment) can do for you. Oh and by the way, at her income level she is not paying any income tax.

The correct ratio?? The fact remains MOST desi's are successful in Canada. It does not matter what they do. None of my friends are in IT. None of my friends came with money. But here we are. We live a comfortable life, without fear, holding our heads high. None of us are rich, but that is not the measure of success, for us anyway.

The reason why we have to imagine her living in India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan etc, is this. There are people working for minimum wage, people who do two jobs, single parents etc. living in these countries. Do you think they can get the basic medical coverage like this lady is getting here? Do you think they can afford to send kids to school even when on strike?? Do you think the police would respond to her if she needed help in any of those countries? So if she had a choice of where she'd like to live, where do you think she would be? Don't kid yourself.

Zafar Bhai,

I am a bit intrigued by your response to this article. You are trying to connect this unfortunate situation with the general condition of immigrants here. To begin with, poverty in Canada is a reality which no one can deny. But is it limited to immigrants only? For the sake of discussion I would like to use the term “White Canadian’s”. Now tell me have you not seen any poor “white Canadian’s”? That fact of the matter is that immigrants form part of this group; they are not the ONLY people in this group. Also in every country in the world you have poor people, even in America there are 35.9 million people living below poverty threshold. That does not mean that somehow America is showing a wrong picture to the world (well at least this not something that any country wants the world to see)

Another thing that I have been hearing a lot is that somehow the Canadian government is trying to push people into labor jobs. Now in what way does the Canadian government benefit by pushing qualified people into labor jobs? If they want people for only labor jobs they will get people specifically for that. Infact you are right to say that Canadian market needs truck drivers. That is why Canadian government is providing faster process of visa in this category.

In my opinion the government is aware of this problem and is trying to tackle this problem. But knowing the working of government and bureaucracy, they take their own sweet time. They have started a number of programs for newcomers, which in my opinion is a good step forward. I myself have benefited from one such program. Even in some restricted field they are trying to provide some relief to immigrants.

Regarding “lack” of proper medical care, again this is a problem faced by all “Canadian’s” irrespective of his/her being an immigrant or “white”. I have had to wait for 7-8 hours in ER to get treatment. But again no one was given “preference” over me; even “white Canadian’s” had to wait.

Canada has a lot of problems, I agree and so do most of the people in this forum. But your trying to connect it to immigrants somehow gives a picture that they are being unfairly treated because of that.

Regards

Point we are missing is, She is not skilled immigrant. With all my respect to her profession whatever is her situation she is being paid good for her skills.
Now coming back to skilled catagory, are you really struggling in Canada after investing fair amount of efforts. Unsuccessful immigrant is a more specific problem related to GTA which is 10% of Canada's population. Move out of GTA to be successful if you feel traped in a situation.

When you immigrate to Canada you are open to wide choices and you have the room to develope and explore yourself . She has been there for 13 yrs , first yrs after her landing she was set as her husband was earning etc . She shud have grabbed that moment and developed her skilles gotten basic education and made herself capable enough to earn enough on rainy days with a better job .

I know its easier said then done but when you reach or immigrate to such countries its always better to upgrade yourself and make urself capable as you dont know whats next in ur life .

In her situation she is a single mother inspite of having a husband that is the reason she is find it diffucult to manage .. If she had her husband along and herself working then they would have double income , they would have been a hand to mouth earning family and would have no complains .

Circumstances in life can turn leafs around .. you dont know what comes next.

Besides , if you are not edcuated there is lot of prospects in canada , she can start home catering , roti making , mehndi in weddings or also she can start babysitting or caregiving to the elders ... There is lot of ways as choices are not limited in such countries.

I know someone she is a single mother of two kids 13 yrs and 16 yrs , she has been in canada for 12 yrs now , she moved from Africa with 100 USD , her husband left her for another woman , She educated herself slowly it took her 10 yrs to complete her high school and then finished her degree last yr . She learnt how to drive and started driving calgary transport small bus service , now she is in administation dept and a holder of a mechanical degree , made a house and paid off her debts , has a car and her house is almost paid off now . She has struggled and she is fine , she had the Will to it and she grabbed every oppurtunity which came along her way .

Hi,
I am not negative about here. I want to show people other side of coin, which everyone wants to hide from outside people.

Everyone will show pictures of High raise building in Toronto proudly but no one will show you people sleeping on back of bus stop WHY? You can find beggars looking for TTC tickets or money in Toronto streets, myself happens three times why not told by anyone?

People see out from their apartment or house window and say, WOW what a green yard and paved road. Achievement for these people is, what ever they get. More when these people start telling others about here, it looks to others like there are dollar's trees here.
May be for these people making pictures in front high raise building is A achievement but me no it is not achievement. Actually these people are cheating own self and false hopes to outsiders.

BV good said "Government is People", it is only good in writing. "Government is for people" If people perform responsibilities honestly then they should also expect same from Government

Puttoo thank for accepting that there are problems in Canada for immigrants, in healthcare system. May be even few people do not know, there is problem.

Nur thanks for telling a success story but must think that's one in million. Every one looks forward for own success by good or bad means but it is not guaranteed to work.
One friend describes Canada as “heaven for single mothers, graveyard of Old people and hell for married man with kids”

I will keep on pointing things about here, what other thinks shameful to say. Do not show good side also show bad side too.

Regards,
