when you landing for the first time, my advice would be don't make any long term commitment. If possible, search in canadiandesi, kijiji, craiglist or toronto star and arrange to stay 15 days to 1 month with desi people who are ready to share apartment. they will charge you $500 pm rent but they will pick you up from airport and they will guide you all the way and they will treat you like family members without getting personally involved.
As far as possible, land during summer time i.e April-may till Oct-Nov. This time, you can stay in basement also and you can pay as you go. i.e month to month rent.
Don't leave your job and come, take leave and you can go back to your job if you don't get job in say 2 months time.
After coming here, you have two choice, if your position is not financially strong then, start hourly basis job $10 per hour immdly and survive. second option, if you have money to survive for say 1-2 years ($30-$40 k) in hand and if you are determined to go in you line of work say Doctor/Engg to have job in your own field, then do attend one workshop as soon as you land, join co-op, work voluntarily and get canadian reference and experience and simultaneously get give exams and get certifications done which will take 6-8 months.
hepe this helps little bit.

Hi kpv343
Thanks for the link, but they are expensive compared to Darry's!
@ Fido and others the address what Darry Provided is below, do they have any groceries nearby?
119 MICMAC CRESCENT
TORONTO, ONT
M2H 2K
How is eating outside (need not be Indian alone) (not fancy restaurants) is it expensive?
The address you have given seems to be their other location. I stayed near Don Mills - Finch intersection. There is an Indian grocery in Peanut Plaza on Don Mills road which is in a walkable distance from where we stayed.
I do not know whether there are any Indian grocery shops near the place that you have mentioned. The address you have given is not very far from Don Mills road, but not within a walkable distance to Peanut Plaza.
Cheers
Same here ... I also recall walking to the Plaza to the Indian store ... However , you might need to go to the Indian store only once a while .... Keep your grocery in stock and I believe they have a kitchen where you can cook your meals .... If you are the heat and eat kinds , then you mght wish to buy some heat and eat curries readily available here as much as in Dxb as well as some pita bread ....
I sincerely do not feel that people should go to guest houses which offer Indian / veg meals , if one has to compromise on the accomodation quality ...
