Hi,

I stayed in Darry's guest house when I came to Toronto as a newcomer in August 2009. I would say it is good (value for money). Their Don Mills - Finch location is good. I came with my family and we were impressed with the locality. I had a good experience and would recommend it.

Try to minimise your stay in guest house as far as possible and get an apartment as soon as possible.

Just my two cents

Cheers:)

Thank You Fido And Thank you Ash06,
You guys are doing a remarkable work by rendering positive feedback to new Desi's
who arrive in Canada.

I have few more questions, as advised Mississauga would be a no-no for initial stay of a year i guess due to commuting. The place to settle would be Toronto until we are ready with our own commuting or as per our work area.

I am arriving with my daughter who is 9 years and in grade 4 and i would really appreciate...
1) if a pointer is given to a school and safe neighborhood in Toronto.
2) How long is a suitable time to stay in a Guest house?
3) What is the best and safe way to find an apartment in Toronto?

Thank you all once again

Hi ctcONE,

1. Generally speaking, Toronto is relatively safe. I have heard that some areas (like Jane and Keele and areas around Jane are not considered safe). I may be wrong. As regards to school, you have to enrol your child to the school allotted to your area of residence. I don't think you have much of a choice in this. If you are particular about any school you have to find a place to stay within the allotted area for that school.

My advice would be to go and have a look at the apartments and you will get a feel of that place. Most of the times your instinct will tell you whether you are comfortable in that place or not and most of the times your instinct will help you to arrive at a right decision. It may be good idea to stay in a 'desi' area. Proximity to school, malls, desi grocery store(s) and transportation (subway or bus stops) are some of the main considerations apart from proximity to your workplace (if applicable).

2. I would say about two to three weeks (max). It all depends on how fast you can hunt for an apartment suitable to your needs. Many apartment managements ask for some reference or guarantor or both if you are not employed. Some managements accept new tenants based on bank balance. Go through the terms and conditions or contract and clarify all your doubts before signing anything.

3. My suggestion is to go through the free magazines available in road side boxes (near bus stops etc.) and short list the ones of your liking. Buy a Toronto map. Be sceptical about unknown people who may want to 'help' you, if any. Buy a TTC pass and go around to familiarise yourself with the city.

Hope this helps

Cheers:)

I would think twice before renting an apartment as it is a one year commitment and you are at a better position to rent one , once you have a job as most of the lease need you to be earning as well as you know which area you will be in ... Suppose you rent an apartment in Toronto but get a job @ Mississauga , you are stuck !!

Also moving is a big head ache ....

I would stay temporarily for 1-2 months or till I get a job and then decide .

Fido is absuletlly right …. Don’t take any commitement on appartment untill youfind the job.
Just take basement appartment for cuple of month , this will give u chance to reseach area, comminity, transit , shopping, school etc…
As well as you will build up some of the referance, jobs that will help you get good appartment.
I would say stay close to toronto in the beginning , like etobicoke, northyork area..
