When starting on a diet like this you may want to think about long term goals.

Is this plan sustainable(how long will you use it to keep off the weight) in the long run? (I personally find it easier to say that I will exercise for the rest of my life than say that I will have a meal replacement shake for the rest of my life)

If not sustainable what will be the effects once one is off it? Will it lead to yo-yo dieting?

If dropping pounds is the idea it may work in the short run but it will probably not affect the overall body shape/proportion. Also other problem areas e.g: cellulite may remain unaffected. Tightening the skin/increasing muscular tone is the way around.

More importantly are you planning to complement the diet with an exercise plan/increased physical activity? The success of keeping weight off and staying healthy may depend more on this lifestyle change than the shake itself.

p.s: I do use supplements...but only to increase energy levels to support my exercise regime. So I add a shake to my regular meals(small portions). i.e: eat to support lifestyle...the focus being on the lifestyle.

Hi Jake,

I totally understand what you are saying. It is not my intention to continue this diet for a long period of time. I have really selfish reasons why I am on it...I need to lose a few lbs fast as (and please don't laugh) I need to get myself into an outfit in time for a wedding in a months time.

I don't know if you remember but I mentioned a few months back that I had just joined a gym and I have been going regularly 3 times a week, concentrating on doing mainly cardio with some weights. I have noticed a change in body shape since then and I have lost approx 10lbs in about 3 months. I've also been eating as sensibly as I can (although I did have a couple of Krispy Kremes last weekend) and all in all I'm happy with the progress I've made so far.

I know this is a short term fix, and I know that there's no way I could stay on this liquid diet forever even if I wanted to....I love my steak just as much as Dimple does!! :D

I completely agree with jake3d that meal replacement is not a long term solution. I know many people who have done it and it works wonders eg.. lost 1 lb a day sometimes that means 15-20 pounds a month! However when one comes back to normal routine, the weight gain is doubled. I would suggest, go for it but 2-3 times a weak and other days just maintain usual diet with excercise. That way your body would be used to of digesting normal food. In long term, it is harmful to strictly follow this type of diet consisting of pills and shakes. All the best in your weigth management process. Please keep us posted as that will be helpful for all.

Thanks and Cheers!

RR

I would actually recommend a nice juicy steak and a salad minus the side servings(fries/chips/bread) a cpl times a week. If you are working out right its probably going to help you loose/keep off the weight compared to say a white bread/rice with veggie curry combo which creates an blood sugar spike and an insulin response, which converts calories to fat faster.
The other days go with the complex carbs(whole wheat/fruits/veggies) which does not create the blood sugar spike and fills you up faster VS the simple ones which you can eat a lot more of before feeling full.

p.s: just a high protein diet of steaks minus any carbs can help you reduce your weight. I think its unhealthy in the long run.

I'm sure you'll fit into that outfit just fine :)

Hi there everyone, good topic PP

While we are on the subject of meal replacment....i would like some take on drinking zero cal drinks...like diet pepsi /coke or even using splenda or some artificial sweetner as opposed to regular sugar?

What are the effects in the long run? i have spoken to a lot of doctors..and they actually recommend it while one is trying to lose weight...but we all know that losing weight is the easy part...its keeping it off thats difficult...and thats what we are looking at..... whats the use if its all gonna climb back on?? (no offence PP...ur reason is completely valid!!!:p )

I believe in making changes one can keep up with, i dont want to switch to brown bread..if i am going to stop after i lose X amount of weight...same with pasta, chocolates, cake, soft drinks.... i'd rather indulge myself once in a while and keep up with working out and watching my portions. And while i am at it...i want to eat the real thing...not an artificial substitute...

Just my views.... would appreciate some feedback on dietpepsi/coke.

Thanks.

Thanks for the encouragement!!

For the last couple of years I have been doing exactly what you suggest above when it comes to eating out. I'll either have a steak with veggies and salad, or salmon with the same. But it's hard when you're at The Keg because they have the best loaded baked potato!! But I do feel less bloated afterwards.

When it comes to indian food, I eat just one roti and and stick to just one spoonful of rice, but I never have both in one meal, it's either/or. And I make a lot more daals these days too!

Once I've used up my normal white roti flour, I'm going to get whole wheat flour. I hear they taste exactly the same anyway. But I find brown rice takes way too long to cook. As long as I stick to my routine....I'll be where I want in terms of weight....

Skinny, sky blue, fish-cut, hipster style lengha, here I come!!! :D

Hi MI,

It doesn't have to all climb back on. I think the word "diet" should be banned. The way to loosing the lbs and more importantly keeping it off is what Jake referred to before as making a lifestyle change. First of all, there are many small changes you can make with your everyday food and you don't have to compromise on taste or quality. It's about changing one habit for another. If you find that you are snacking on junk in between meals, you don't have to stop snacking, just make sure it's a healthy snack. I used to eat a chocolate muffin and a can of coke around 10.30am, as that's when I got a little peckish before lunch, but now I have a banana or an apple and a cup of low fat yoghurt which is way better for you.

I think you'll find that you generally start to feel healthier too, and not so sluggish, as I used to feel.

Also, you are right about having moderate amounts of the "real" stuff...for eg, I use a low fat spread on my bread, but when it comes to cooking, I'll used real butter if the recipe calls for it. Same goes for cheese.

I drink diet coke almost everyday. I don't even drink fruit juices unless it's diluted with water. I don't use artificial sweetener, I just don't like the taste of it. Instead I used regular sugar, but less of it.

I have a suggestion I did not know how you will take it; Actually you can make money while loosing your weight if you prepared to do hard jobs on week ends........................
