Hi All,

Do Canadian companies use "landline" telecommunications ?

Are "cellular" telecommunications more common?

Are there still jobs/demand for those in the former group?>

If an individual has a degree in Electronics & Communications Engineering from outside of Canada what are the chances of them finding work ?

Thanks,

Yes all the companies use the landline and I do not think any where in the world companies can rely wholly on the wireless due to its inherent level of comfort. But the traffic is more and more switching over to VOIP. Further the entry in to most of the telecomm companies face the same barrier as is in all of the Canadian companies. Typically the big companies encourage to join their call centers and then from there one can grow. Most of the times it is a matter of luck and chance but there exists no consistent approach for absorbing people with expertise and education in electronics and communication. Some companies are more inclined to accept people from immigrant or visible minorities and some are not.

It is better to upgrade to a Canadian Masters degree then all doors open up.

Hi folks

I am also in telecom and in the process of moving to Canada. I have some questions regarding the prerequisite for joing the telcom industry. I have 8 years of experience in GSM and Satellite telecom arena. My specialisation is in Telecom Revenue Assurance and Fraud Management. I represent for my company as a delegate to GSM Association's Fraud Forum.

I would like to know what kind of expectations should I have when I land. Secondly as mentioned, may have to start with call center, would like to know what payscale can one expect for such start ups.

Your answers will be highly appreciated

Regards
Maple

Your most promising option should be Rogers as it is a GSM company. Further it is based in Toronto especially the Fraud prevention and Revenue Assurance groups. Typical pay scale in call centre or otherwise is $15 +. Revenue Assurance groups for other CDMA companies are located all around the country. May be you can try Calgary or Vancouver for Telus and Montreal for Bell but Bell may require bilingual people for jobs based in Montreal.

While I appreciate all the responses I have received, I dont think my question was fullyanswered.

I have a client who is trying to find work in the field - and they have their degree from outside of Canada. Unfortunatley I do not know about this field so thought i'd ask the rest of you.

:)

Hi MR,

I'm not a telecom guy myself, but presently work in IT projects for a telecom company. From what I have seen, telecom seems to be doing well here.

I've seen an immigrant with an Electronics & Communications degree from India with no "North American experience" but solid experience in telecom companies in India and the Middle East landing a good job as a business analyst here. Marketing yourself, and luck (being in the right place at the right time) play a major role as well.

Of course companies still use landline. So is the case with Cellular. However, VOIP is well on its way to becoming the next big thing - if it hasn't already.

Their best bet is to check out jobs with telecom giants like Telus, Rogers, Shaw etc in their websites. Telus in particular has been doing quite a bit of hiring in the last 1 year or so.

Let me know if you need any further information.
