The question still is WHAT NOW? How do we handle it NOW. How do we cultivate the feelings of mutual respect and brotherhood among all people? How for example do you tell people not to give into consumerism...at the same time how do we tell people that no faith has the authourity to take someone elses life. Both have to be achieved simultaneously for any tangible benefits. How do we open up the middle east societies to a more tolerant view of other religions? Will the whole world be ready to accept democracy and secularism at the same time? Unless this is possible...the inevitable showdown is only delayed.

I dont think its possible to impose the same mindset on all peoples of the globe at this point in time. I'm afraid we now have to deal with the practical problems and logistics of the 'results' of decades of grievances instead of trying to impose feelings of mutual respect in all and 'nipping the cause'.

Seeing the middle east looks like we are in for a rough ride. We may all one day sit down and decide together 'Never Again'. Maybe thats the silver lining.

Jake,

I was asking rhetorical questions :)

I wish I knew how to cultivate the feelings of mutual respect among all people. I'd probably be the smartest person on earth!! :)

You mentioned the middle east: Do other religions of the world tolerate the middle east (by which I mean Muslim majority countries)? Are we as 'tolerant' in north america as we think we are?

I agree - that is what we can hope for. Unfortunatley I dont think its going to happen in our life times...

NA secular and democratic. This implies that all people are the same. I cannot speak for individual North Americans but yes the constitution advocates tolerance and that is the official policy. The ground realities may differ but there is legal recourse supported by the system

As for us being Tolerant of of muslim Majority countries. Is the country secular or not. Do they tolerate minority religious rights within their own nations? What do their constitution and laws say about minority rights? If you do a little research on countries like Saudiarabia, Pakistan etc. You will see what the law of the land is (even in progressive Jordan the penalty of selling land to a jew is deathEDIT:this was until 1995 however, jews are still barred by various legalities).

One can then decide how tolerant we want to be of such countries.

Im not a radical feminist by any means

However I am interested in the situation of women in the ME. The poverty, illiteracy and other restrictions that women live with.

Another rhetorical (rambling) when I should be working :)

What if the world was run by the women?

Why are they supressed?

Thanks for the link.

If you took it to a micro level - an individual with a need for such control would likely be feeling low self esteem, feel powerless/helpless and the only way to make themselves feel 'big' is by intimidating others (ie/ husband controlling his wife).

Its like they are afraid of losing something... and reactive (childish even) to keep hold on to it stubbornly.

As I said earlier..imagine what would happen if women were equal partners to men in the Arab world... i bet the whole system would fall on its butt.

In terms of a micro level you hit the nail on the head. In terms of controlling the masses, well that's why we have religion...
