I do not know what to make someone's assertion that creation of Israel was a mistake.

Just one question - What if Gandhi had given away half or more of then India to Pakistan since some places in Hydrabad, Gujarat, UP etc are with Muslim majority! Gandhi's philosophy in that arena was questionable at best.

May I add that Netaji, like Mahtma was also a towering personality, worthy of worship. Just that for Gandhiji, means were as important as the ends. He was also able to look beyond the obvious.
Regarding Israel, long time back there was this interviewer from the news channel (ND TV?) asking some one in Israel as to why Israel was created in its present location. The Israeli, arrogantly replied "Go and look it up in the Old Testament". If all historical wrongs have to be corrected, the world will be full of wars all the time. If Britan and USA wanted a new land for Jews they should have carved out some land from California or Scotland. The world would have applauded their charity.

I'm digressing a bit from the ot, but on what basis does one establish the legality of a state? Its a historical fact that Semites were the original inhabitants of the area. Current arabs and Jews both belong to this race.
The Jews trace themselves in the area back to 1211 BC. After Roman conquest they called the area 'Palestine'(Syria Palaestina to be exact) ...due to jewish revolts etc. Islam did not exist at this point in history.

The Muslims conquered the place 638 AD. Jews and Arabs(now mostly muslims) coexisted. Some Jews even lived in Medina. Ironically Christianity(Byzantine rule in particular) had made Jerusalem 'jew-free' and it took a muslim Caliph to allow Jews to come back and live there. Now through the years the area was under the crusaders/mongols/muslim/ottoman rule during various points in history. Jewish population declined however they still lived in the land as a minority even through out the middle ages under depressed conditions. Expulsion from Spain and portugal in the 15th century increased the # of jews in the land.

The area fell under British rule in early 1900s(I think). After the Balfour declaration, the Jewish state of Israel was established.

So who does the land actually belong to? Are the people with the oldest roots the ones who can lay claim to the land? Or is legality based on might/conquest/historical happenings/current demographics? I personally think it(land) belongs to one who can keep it.

It looks to me like the Jews win either way(historical roots OR current conditions). The land is currently with the Jews who have the means to keep it that way. That may change and time will tell.
