I'm in ottawa , canada and i want to make my career in movies, its basically my dream to become a director of movies. I'm little bit confused about where to start from?

Please guide me and give me some suggestions .

get a camera and make a film, and then another. Keep going till you are doing what you want to. Be it shorts or features. Keep chasing the dream.

use the advice by Jake and once you have a portfolio under your belt approach some production houses who might be interested.

Secondaly if you study for some courses in the same field, you might network with relevant people in the industry.

This thread belongs in a different area...probably Jobs or general chat but anyways.

Most good colleges for film like the Mel Oppenhiem school in Montreal requires you to have a good portfolio to begin with. So if you do not have any experience in the visual arts...I suggest you get some. After all what you are trying to do is tell stories through a dominantly visual medium.

Google your way through film schools and find out their requirements. Start with schools in your vicinity. Go and talk to the people who run the programs. If you are accepted without a portfolio...maybe then its not worth it anyway. There may be exceptions( i doubt it). Do your research.

This field is obviously EXTREMELY competitive and difficult to get into. Your portfolio will help you get into school but once you are there your network and talent comes into play.
